Hamilton wins F1 Canadian GP, picks up points on Vettel

May JohnsonJun 22, 2017

Lewis Hamilton showed some incredible pace this weekend at Montreal in the 2017 Formula One Canadian Grand Prix as he managed to come closer to Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel in the championship standings.

Hamilton said working in such a big company like Mercedes mistakes are bound to happen but is happy that they are where they belong at the moment.

"This time 10 years ago I got my first ever Grand Prix win". "And then I knew I had to catch up, which I did until the end of the lap, but just enough to do the same time as before, so not entirely clean. To equal him. I just can't believe it".

But yesterday proved to be a blast from the past as Mercedes picked up their first one-two finish of 2017 at the Canadian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton triumphed ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas.

"More importantly for us, we've got a better understanding of the vehicle and hopefully we can put it in the same spot for the coming races - we know now after the last race where to develop this auto moving forward and that is going to really make a difference in winning this championship".

"They did such a great job of analysing what went wrong, all the points", he said.

Hamilton's third victory of the 2017 season after a performance to forget in Monaco saw him trim Sebastian Vettel's world championship lead to 12 points after his key title rival battled back to finish a hard day in fourth.

Trump tweets again, in defense of his tweeting
A close Trump associate said this week the president was considering firing Mueller, although the White House later denied it. Still, the snowballing investigation has deeply angered Trump, who denies he has any nefarious ties to Russian Federation .

Vettel was not particularly slow out of the starting blocks, but as Bottas dived underneath the German, and Max Verstappen raced around the outside, the driver who had finished either first or second at every round of the season so far, was suddenly on the back foot.

The two Force Indias came under intense pressure from Sebastien Vettel late in the race, who put in a series of fast laps to move back to the front of the grid and pass both Perez and Ocon for fourth.

The race delivered immediate drama.

Behind them, Sainz collided with Frenchman Romain Grosjean's Haas and then spun and crashed into the barriers, collecting Brazilian Felipe Massa's Williams along the way. One of the problems was the wind tunnel gave them one reading and the simulator gave them a different and along with that a mistake in setting up their vehicle which prevented them getting Pirelli's supersoft and ultrasoft tires working in their limited temperature windows.

The race got off to a chaotic start when, in his haste to reach the front, Verstappen ran over Vettel's front wing, which caused the championship leader to pit early and switch to a less optimal strategy. The pit stop to fix the damage left the Ferrari at the back of the field just six laps in.

Sunday's full quota of points sees him claw back vital ground with Vettel in the title fight following Mercedes' poor showing in Monaco two weekends ago - both Hamilton and Bottas failed to make the podium. This saw a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) signalled until lap 14 when the racing resumed with the two Mercedes in control. His team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was seventh.
