Traffic cameras in Victoria infected by WannaCry ransomware

An audit of WA speed and red light cameras has determined none have been corrupted by the same computer virus that has led to hundreds of infringements being cancelled in Victoria.

The ransomware has managed to work its way into 55 cameras including red light cameras created to capture images of drivers jumping red lights at highway intersections, and speed monitoring cameras.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Ross Guenther made the announcement, stating that over 50 cameras had been affected by the the WannaCry ransomware virus between June 6, and June 22. "I canceled the fines because I think it's important the public has 100% confidence in the system".

An IT News report later upped the number of affected cameras to 55. An engineer connected an infected USB stick to the camera controller.

Victoria Police said a virus had been detected and authorities were in discussions with RedFlex.

The Department also insisted those who receive tickets for speeding or other traffic offenses after being caught by the cameras won't be able to argue the malware infection compromised the cameras.

Remember WannaCry? The fearsome ransomware package that infected over 250 000 computers in 150 countries earlier this year?

While the ransomware's spread has since been quelled, there are still instances alive in the wild. The Victoria Police force was called in and opened "strategic communications" lines with the state's Justice Department and the independent operator of its road safety system, Serco, about the incident.

The station quoted a spokesman from the department of justice and regulation as saying: "A system patch has been applied, which prevents the spread of the virus. All cameras have been operating correctly and accurately during this period".
