Seattle police kill woman that family says was pregnant

Lyles told the 911 operator that her children were in the house with her. They nevertheless found themselves with little time to react when she snapped about two minutes after they began taking her report.

The killing has prompted outrage among many, including Lyles' family, who questioned why the officers couldn't use nonlethal methods to subdue the diminutive 30-year-old and suggested that race played a role.

Surveillance video released Thursday from the hallway outside Charleena Lyles' apartment shows that she never left her home and no one entered in the 24 hours before Sunday's police shooting that left the pregnant mother dead, Seattle police said. That police report described Lyles as having "armed herself with a pair of extra long metal shears" and that she had been "threatening the officers".

'And at that point, fearing for what was about to happen, what she would do to me, um, being stuck in that spot, I fired my handgun, ' he told investigators, noting he remembered hearing shots coming from Anderson's location.

Police say 34-year-old Steven McNew and 32-year-old Jason Anderson were the officers who shot Charleena Lyles on Sunday.

The pregnant woman fatally shot by Seattle police loved to sing and dance. She was released from jail on conditions, and her case was referred to mental-health court.

Charles Lyles said his daughter liked to take her children to carnivals and do fun things with them.

The encounter between the officers and Lyles started calmly as heard in an audio recording.

Hundreds of people turned out for a protest march Tuesday night, and responses from the city's mayoral candidates after Lyles was killed included calls for improved mental health systems, further changes in police training and demands for transparency in the shooting's investigation.

Anderson said he wasn't carrying a Taser because the battery in his died two weeks earlier, but he told investigators he wouldn't have used it anyway because he was trained to use lethal force when someone is attacking with a knife.

Lyles' family attorney James Bible criticized the release of the video Thursday and questioned the department's motives.

McNew and Anderson are now on paid administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation.
