Man visually impaired by eclipse warns others of viewing solar event

Kerry GarnerAug 19, 2017

Lost in the excitement leading up to Monday's solar eclipse is a basic reminder: Don't view the phenomenon without proper eye protection.

Brandon Lujan, an assistant professor of Opthamology in OR, told Fox 12 that damage can become apparent immediately after looking at the sun OR after a delay of a few hours to a few days.

"The sun at that time, at 3:30 p.m., was in the one o'clock position", said Tomososki. "He got the left eye and I got the right eye", said Tomososki, now 71-years of age.

Tomososki and a friend believed that if they stared at the sun long enough to view the eclipse, the brightness would go away.

So eclipse glasses are a must on Monday. "I'm glad I didn't go 40 seconds, it would have been even worse".

People with solar retinopathy show a very characteristic pattern of eye damage during an exam.

"Why would you a take chance with your eyes?" he said.

REMEMBER: Looking directly at the sun, even when it is partially covered by the moon, can cause serious eye damage or blindness.

There is no scientifically proven treatment available for the damage, Suh said.

They recommend you not look in the direction of the eclipse, they also stress that you don't wear the protective glasses while driving as this can be unsafe as well.

"Some damage occurs pretty quickly, but a lot of damage can take hours to days to really come to bear", Lujan said. In fact, even those who have already bought their eclipse glasses are still warned to check if they are safe and certified. However, that only applies to the people viewing the eclipse in the path of totality, in which they will actually see the sun blocked by the moon. And 55 years later, "Nothing has changed", he told TODAY.

In 1962, Lou Tomososki was excited to witness the eclipse after learning about it from his science teacher.

Tomososki has been sharing his story because he worries people will look directly at the sun on Monday during the Great American Eclipse. It's important to highlight the same thing can happen to cameras, so if you plan to snap some photos of the solar eclipse, put the glasses on the lens.
