Trump celebrates solar eclipse by looking up without special viewing glasses

Kerry GarnerАвг 22, 2017

Staring directly at the sun, without the powerful ultraviolet protection afforded by eclipse glasses, can cause solar retinopathy, a condition that can lead to vision problems or even blindness. According to a White House pool report, one of Trump's aides shouted "Don't look" when Trump came out and pointed at the sky.

The internet lit up instantly, because organizations and scientists have spent the past few days begging people not to view the partial eclipse with the naked eye because it could damage their retinas.

President Trump looks up toward the solar eclipse with out glasses, with first lady Melania Trump by his side, from a balcony at the White House in Washington, D.C. on Monday, Aug 21, 2017.

Trump was photographed taking in the historic event from the White House with his son Barron and first lady Melania, who threw on a pair of black shades. Symptoms of retinal burns include temporary or permanent distorted vision, altered color vision, and loss of vision altogether.

First Daughter and presidential advisor Ivanka Trump was also preparing to watch the eclipse on Monday. But unlike millions of Americans, he went against the much-repeated and often-emphasized advice of NASA, ophthamologists and moms everywhere and looked at the sun without glasses. The White House originally said Trump would watch from the second-floor Truman balcony.
