Concord, California Throws Its Hat in the Ring in Amazon Bid

Oscar PerrySep 11, 2017

According to a report in The New York Times, Amazon execs have privately been expressing concerns that the company's giant footprint in Seattle is beginning to generate some negative consequences, including skyrocketing housing prices, an intense competition for highly skilled workers and the daily traffic jams that are the norm in larger metro areas.

It notes that Amazon's presence in Seattle generated from 2010 through 2016 an additional $38 billion for the city's economy, and "every dollar invested by Amazon in Seattle generated an additional $1.4 for the city's economy, overall". Is Seattle continuing to hold Amazon's growth an option? "Seattle Mayor Ed Murray is one of them; he pushed a $15 minimum wage law that has cost the poorest the most, and won a tax hike on higher earners earlier this summer".

Amazon said it is seeking proposals by Oct 19 and will select the location next year.

Amazon says it employs more than 40,000 people in Seattle directly-part of a global workforce of 380,000-and it's only about two-thirds of the way through its now committed construction program. There are no sites in the city where 10 million square feet could be built - unless the company strung a campus along the waterfront with 3 million to 5 million square feet of buildings at Hunters Point, 2 million square feet at Pier 70, and another million square feet at Mission Rock, the Giants' planned development across Mission Creek from AT&T Park.

The company, which has more than 380,000 employees worldwide, said it would add as many as 50,000 jobs for the new headquarters.

"With our first-class workforce and easy access to major highways like I-95 and the northeast corridor railway, the First State would make a great location for Amazon's second North American headquarters".

So what will it take to get the Amazon headquarters to be built here in St. Louis?

Mattis breaks with Trump on diplomacy with North Korea
On a recent trip to the region, he said the military's main goal is supporting USA efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula. Ren Guoqiang told reporters that all parties should exercise restraint and avoid words and actions that escalate tension. launched a nationwide search Thursday for a place to plant a second headquarters, and its ideal spot sounds a lot like the Bay Area: a metropolitan region with plenty of public transit, an global airport, good universities and strong allure for technical talent.

"Amazon will want to be in a time zone farther east since they are now in Seattle", says Grady Gammage Jr., co-founder and partner at Gammage and Burnham.

"It would be absurd for Seattle to simply give up and accept the premise that one of the country's most forward-thinking and dynamic cities is fated to play second-fiddle to Fort Worth in population growth and force its most successful company to seek its fortunes elsewhere", Yglesias wrote. "In fact, next year, we'll add three new direct flights".

Amazon expects to announce its decision next year and will start work on the new campus by 2019. Already, this new office of which the size would be similar to that of the siege of Seattle (929.000 square meters) will host 50,000 employees, of which a majority of the new recruits.

Austin is no stranger to putting together incentive packages together.

Amazon, with a market cap of $468.7 billion and $13.2 billion in cash on hand as of the last quarter, is rightly coming under criticism for spurring a bidding war among local governments to win the HQ2 prize.

"This move will not be cost driven". So while other cities eagerly chase the Amazon goose and its golden eggs, don't be surprised to see Boston decide it's too much of a good thing.
