BMW Championship: Marc Leishman extends lead to five in Chicago

Oscar PerrySep 18, 2017

At 19-under, he will go into Sunday's final round at Conway Farms with a commanding five-shot lead over Day and Fowler.

Leishman then made gains at the eighth, 13th and 18th to extend his advantage to five shots.

It was a feel-good moment in charity, and on the scorecard.

AUSTRALIAN Marc Leishman raced out of the blocks on his way to a two-stroke lead but several big names were lined up within striking distance after the first round at the BMW Championship outside Chicago yesterday. It's very easy to have bogeys out there.

"I'm here, so I might as well try to play well and try to get the most out of myself".

After opening with 62 and 64, a steady if not spectacular round of 68 seemed nearly pedestrian for Leishman.

"We were trying to land it 182 (yards) and I kind of pushed it", said the 29-year-old, who won the 2015 title at Conway Farms.

Leishman has never led the first three rounds of a PGA Tour event and came from behind during his two PGA Tour wins; the 2012 Travelers Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this year.

The largest margin of victory in a FedExCup Playoffs event is eight strokes, which Tiger Woods accomplished twice (2007 TOUR Championship, 2009 BMW Championship).

The BMW is the third of four events in the PGA Tour's FedExCup Playoffs.

Fowler also finished strongly, with three birdies and an eagle for a 64.

Spieth leads the FedEx Cup standings ahead of Justin Thomas, though the American has struggled for consistency at the BMW Championship this week.

The Australian drained a 20-footer at the 11th and picked up another shot at the next, with back-to-back birdies from the 14th helping him set the clubhouse target. "Tomorrow, I need to execute".

Day nailed a 20-footer at the 10th and added four more birdies over his final six holes, with Hoffman later joining him in joint-second after finishing with back-to-back gains.

Fowler got off to the flawless start with an eagle at the opening hole, but he struggled for the remainder of the round and carded a disappointing 70 along with Day, who failed to make a birdie after the turn as firmer, faster conditions made scoring more hard.
