Pro-Trump accounts tried to frame left-wing activist for Las Vegas shooting

Marion JacobsOct 03, 2017

The death toll makes the Las Vegas shooting the deadliest such event in modern USA history. The Safety Check can be used to see who in an area affected by a violent event, such as a mass shooting or a natural disaster, has marked themselves as safe. As a backdrop, the ongoing Congressional investigation into Russian hacking and manipulation around the USA election a year ago has prompted some to suggest Google, Facebook, and Twitter - among others - have not done enough to control misuse of their networks.

And for a time on Monday morning, one of those 4chan threads falsely naming Danley as the shooter was promoted by Google as a "top story" for searches for his name, as one BuzzFeed reporter noticed.

However, 4chan users on /pol-a forum known for its distaste of politically correct culture often attributed to liberalism-quickly picked up on the interests of Geary Danley as indicated by his Facebook like, many of which identified him as a liberal.

Meanwhile, in place of its previous post, The Gateway Pundit is now promoting a story pushing the notion that ISIS is behind the Las Vegas attack, citing the Islamic group's unsupported claims that the shooter "converted to Islam months ago". (Very original.) The Verge reported also seeing photos from the AANR Midwest American Association for Nude Recreation on the Safety Check page for the Las Vegas mass shooting. It has since been taken down, but not before it managed to go viral - and Facebook should be partially to blame for that. That's not exactly what anyone wants to hear, especially when hundreds of millions of people get their news from Facebook and Google.

Air France flight from Paris to LA makes emergency landing in Canada
The November 2010 incident prompted the grounding of the entire Qantas A380 fleet - six A380s at the time - for over three weeks. An global flight on its way to California landed in Goose Bay this afternoon after declaring a mechanical emergency.

The social network said links from Web sites such as "The Gateway Pundit" and others were posted and spread across their site Sunday night.

Earlier this year, investors concerned about the impact fake news may have on these companies' bottom lines recommended policy changes at the annual shareholder meetings of Alphabet, Google's parent company, and Facebook. The fake news was "algorithmically replaced by relevant results", Google said, "within hours". However, its removal was delayed by a few minutes, allowing it to be screen captured and circulated online. "This should not have appeared for any queries, and we'll continue to make improvements to prevent this from happening in the future". "We are working to fix the issue that allowed this to happen", the Facebook representative told CNN.

Google dredged up a search result from internet cesspool 4chan that named the wrong man as the killer.
