Synthetic cannabinoids usage linked several bleeding issues

Among the reported cases in IL, people have reported buying the products at convenience stores and from dealers and friends, according to the state health department. Roughly 10 of the cases were in Tazewell and Peoria Counties.

All 38 people went to hospitals after experiencing some form of severe bleeding, according to the health department. Dr. Melissa Millewich, with Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, said something unknown and new in the product is triggering the bleeding reaction. Each case so far has resulted in hospitalizations, with symptoms including coughing up blood, blood in the urine, severe bloody noses, and bleeding gums.

Arnold said manufacturers could be tweaking the recipe for these products to get around a statewide ban and allow them to be sold legally. Many of these products are packaged in ways that appeal to youth. These substances act on brain receptors and alter our perception of pain and feelings of anxiety. It's not known whether the store is linked to any of the recent illnesses. The process is often inconsistent and leads to variations in product strength and effects.

Last week, the state public health department sent a memo to pharmacies and pharmacists across the state warning they might see patients with prescriptions of unusually high doses of Vitamin K because of the recent outbreak. The substance is sometimes used as a spray on plant material for smoking, or sold as liquids to be vaporized and inhaled in e-cigarettes or other devices, according to the health department's warning.

Synthetic marijuana, also called K2 or spice, isn't a substitute for marijuana, Live Science reported in 2016.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found there's also an association between teens who use synthetic pot and a heightened risk for violent behavior, risky sex and abuse of other drugs. They also warn that any recently purchased fake weed products should not be used as the specific brands causing the unusual symptoms have not been identified.
