Lawsuit Alleges 3 MSU Basketball Players Raped Female Student in 2015

According to the lawsuit, the comments made by MSUCC staff members suggest that female students are discouraged from reported sexual assault when the alleged attackers are well-known athletes. According to a lawsuit filed Monday, the players told the woman that her roommate was to meet them for a party there.

Michigan State has been rocked for months by a sexual assault scandal involving a former sports doctor that now includes his ex-boss.

The university never offered the woman academic assistance, the lawsuit alleges.

The lawsuit alleges an 18-year-old woman in her first year as a student at Michigan State was raped by three players shortly after the basketball season ended.

The woman, who remains a student at MSU, alleges she was at Harper's Bar when the Spartans' basketball team arrived after midnight. It was a few days after the team lost to Duke in the Final Four. She accepted a ride from the players under the guise of a party being thrown at an off-campus apartment belonging to the players.

She accepted a vehicle ride to the party from two players to what turned out to be one of their apartments. "At no point did she consent to the sexual activity".

She agreed to go to the party, but upon entering the apartment, she found no party.

The woman said she was feeling "discombobulated" and tried to "send a phone text, but she could not control her thumbs to formulate a text". She realized something was wrong and thought she might have been drugged, the lawsuit says.

After the woman asked fo water and to see basketball memorabilia, the second player then took her to another room when the lights went out. At some point she said in the lawsuit that her glass was hard to grasp although she had not had much to drink. She was "was crying, she could not move, nor could she speak". The young woman blacked out and woke up on a couch in the apartment hours later. She eventually was forced to withdraw for the rest of the fall 2015 semester because of her mental condition.

Bus carrying fans to the Masters crashes; driver charged with DUI
He said passengers told authorities the bus had drifted off the edge of the road twice before it veered a third time and crashed. The driver, 61-year old Steven Hoppenbrouwer, has been charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain lane.

Almost a year later the woman resumed classes at MSU, but to date her attorney claims that the university has done nothing.

Per a report from ESPN, the players aren't identified because the focus of the lawsuit is "the way she was treated by the university". It was not clear why, or who the person was.

On April 20, 2015, JR2 took the alleged victim to MSU's Counseling Center, or MSUCC, where the alleged victim reported the rape to a counselor and completed an initial intake and assessment.

The counselors also failed to inform the student of other options and didn't comply with Title IX requirement of providing women with equal protection.

She accepted a auto ride to the party from two of the players, including the player who had given her the drink, according to the lawsuit.

The MSU counseling staff told her she could file a police report or deal with the aftermath of the rape on her own.

"In October 2015, Plaintiff had become so traumatized, depressed, and withdrawn to the point that she was admitted to the Sparrow Hospital outpatient psychiatric day program for intensive psychiatric treatment", the document says.

She returned to class in January 2016, and changed her major and goal of becoming a sports journalist. The woman said one of the players told her, "You know you're mine for the night?" and she responded that she was just trying to find her friend.

Her attorney, Karen Truszkowski, told Outside the Lines that her client has not reported the incident to police, but, "I can not say that she's not ever going to report it".
