Lawmakers, legal watchdog pursue discipline for Andrew McCabe

April FrancisApr 20, 2018

The Justice Department's inspector general has sent a criminal referral about fired FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe to federal prosecutors in Washington.

The White House this week said the inspector general's report was serious enough that it gave a "great cause" for the Justice Department to take further action - though the determination rests with the department.

Representatives with the Justice Department, inspector general's office and USA attorney's office all declined to comment. "We are confident that, unless there is inappropriate pressure from high levels of the administration, the U.S. Attorney's Office will conclude that it should decline to prosecute".

In an interview with National Public Radio on Tuesday, former FBI Director James Comey said he had no recollection that McCabe had said he authorized officials to communicate with a Wall Street Journal reporter, as McCabe said he had.

His dismissal drew scrutiny in part because Mr. McCabe was a frequent target of Mr. Trump and Republicans on Capitol Hill.

On Friday, President Donald Trump claimed, "McCabe was totally controlled by Comey - McCabe is Comey!"

The Justice Department inspector general concluded in a February report that McCabe repeatedly misled investigators who were examining a leak to the press.

Comey's interview came shortly after a source told CNN that the Justice Department would provide Congress with memos Comey had written on his conversations with Trump.

Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 Disaster: 'Almost Everyone' Wore Their Oxygen Masks Incorrectly
The Southwest CEO protested that it is too soon to say whether Tuesday's accident is related to any other engine failures. The plane, a Boeing 737 was headed from NY to Dallas with 149 people aboard, made an emergency landing in Philadelphia.

In his testimony to congress several months earlier, FBI director James Comey had refused to answer whether that investigation even existed.

The move would escalate a feud between the Justice Department and the three GOP chairmen - Goodlatte, House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes and House Oversight Chairman Trey Gowdy - who have been demanding access to the Comey memos and other records from the Justice Department as part of their investigation into the FBI's handling of the Clinton email inquiry in 2016. The bureau was investigating the Clinton Foundation, the FBI attorney revealed for the first time to The Journal.

The day after the article's publication, McCabe spoke face-to-face with Comey, who expressed concern about information contained in the news article, according to the inspector general's report.

Though a poll this week found that 69 percent of Americans support Robert Mueller's probe into possible collusion between Trump's campaign and the Russian Federation government, and 64 percent approve of his investigating Trump's business activities, Jordan told Fox News on Tuesday that the American people are being driven insane by a "double standard" against Team Trump.

"I still believe Andrew McCabe is a good person, but the inspector general found he lied", Mr. Comey said. McCabe felt the story would portray him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation unfairly, so he authorized two other Federal Bureau of Investigation officials to give Barrett his account.

Comey seemed to defend the character of McCabe while financing the DOJ inspector overall probe's findings.

"We were advised of the referral within the past few weeks". " I believe the inspector general identified he whined although Andrew McCabe is still a superb person.
