Walter Leroy Moody Executed Thursday Night

April FrancisApr 21, 2018

83, was convicted of the mail-bomb murder of a federal judge and a civil rights attorney in 1989, according to the Associated Press. Prosecutors have said they believed the Robinson bombing was a diversion.

Moody became the oldest US inmate put to death since executions resumed in the the 1970s, according to the nonprofit Death Penalty Information Center.

During his trial, prosecutors said Moody mailed several bombs in December 1989. Moody, he said, fits the definition of a psychopath. And in a sign of how death row populations are aging amid a nationwide decline in executions, Moody became the eighth inmate older than 65 put to death since the beginning of 2015.

Moody was pronounced dead Thursday night inside a south Alabama prison, ending a generations-long legal drama that began in 1972, when he planned a bombing against an automobile dealer who had repossessed his auto. An Alabama state court in 1996 convicted him of murder and sentenced him to death. He became the oldest inmate executed in the United States since the return of executions in the 1970s. Killers are not anxious about what may happen 30 years from now. There were not, for example, last-minute questions about his competency or Alabama's reliance on a lethal injection protocol that includes midazolam, a sedative whose use in executions has been bitterly disputed. One was sent to the main 11th Circuit courthouse in Atlanta and the other to a NAACP office in Jacksonville, Florida.

Zeigler said he is working on a plan - dubbed "Execution Delayed is Justice Denied" - that will "greatly speed up executions without increasing the danger of executing the wrong person".

Moody has maintained his innocence insisting he was framed.

Vance's son, Robert Vance Jr., now a circuit judge in Jefferson County and Democratic candidate for chief justice in Alabama, said it's important that people remember how his father lived, not just how he died. They also argued that the aggravating factors used to impose a death sentence were improper.

He said he had to make peace with his father's death, but said he has no doubt that Moody is guilty.

"The point to emphasize is my Dad was personally opposed to the death penalty but always made clear that his personal feelings had to give way to the law", Vance said.

Moody's reign of terror - deadly bombings and thwarted attacks in three Southern states, as well as menacing letters to judges and the media - raised fears of racial violence and unsettled the federal judiciary. Moody's appeals finally came to a rightful end.

The younger Vance said his father also upheld death sentences because he believed in following the law. "Justice has been served", a press release issued on Thursday by the Alabama Attorney General stated. "Justice has been served".
