With oxygen masks dangling down and passengers screaming as they struggled to save the woman, the pilot's voice conveyed none of the panic rampant aboard Southwest Flight 1380.

Jennifer Riordan, 43, and a mother of two, was nearly sucked out of the broken window and pulled back inside by fellow passengers.

Southwest said after the incident that it was accelerating its existing engine inspection program "out of an abundance of caution" and expected to complete it over the next 30 days.

Firefighter Andrew Needum, of Celina, Texas, said he heard a "loud pop", moments after flight attendants had begun to take drink orders.

"I was thrilled for a couple reasons", she says.

As Business Insider reported, Southwest confirmed that they did send the letters to passengers on the flight, but did not expound on the contents. Ms Mackey said she and the child tried but failed to bring the bank executive back in. "We would do a very methodical investigation", NTSB chairman Robert Sumwalt said.

Riordan is survived by her husband Michael and two children.

Passengers described the former US Navy fighter pilot as having "nerves of steel" during the chaos before miraculously landing the plane.

Social media reports by surviving passengers hailed Shults as having "nerves of steel" and being "a true American hero".

"All we knew we could do was stay with her and get her home", she said.

How many fantastic women doing incredible things will it take before we finally can say, "Wow, what an wonderful pilot!" At the height of the emergency, the Navy-trained pilot maintained calm and cool, and the people who know her best believe that her strong faith in God played a part in how she handled the situation. "She served at the Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron (VAQ-34) in Point Mugu, Calif., as an instructor pilot flying the EA-6B Prowler and F/A-18 Hornet", Sears said.

"I think one reason is they have the wrong impression that women don't have the temperment for it", McCullough says. "She comforted everyone. She's an incredible person".
