A 43-year-old woman who was given mistaken test outcomes and is now critically ill with cervical cancer has settled her High Court activity against a USA lab for €2.5m.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the doctors, nurses and programme staff of CervicalCheck for their continued hard work and commitment towards delivering a first-class service for the women of Ireland.

Dr Flannelly said she had chose to step aside to allow the service continue its important work.

They say any woman who may have not been told that her case has been audited has been informed - or will be informed after the weekend.

The clinical director of the CervicalCheck programme, Dr Grainne Flannelly, has stood down from her role "with immediate effect".

The Irish Times reported on Saturday that Dr Flannelly had advised a Limerick gynaecologist to file some audited smear test results rather than to tell women in certain cases that all-clear smear tests they had received years earlier were wrong. I have made a decision to step aside to allow the Programme to continue it's important work'.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is now reviewing cases from hundreds of women in Ireland who may have been wrongly given negative results by the national cervical cancer screening programme.

A terminally ill mother of two, who was wrongly told she didn't have cancer in 2011, has settled her case against a USA lab for €2.5m.

Health Minister Simon Harris has sent in a hit squad to investigate CervicalCheck. In advance of the peer review being completed it is considered essential that the remainder of the leadership team of the programme remain in situ.

Minister for Health Simon Harris has announced plans to organise repeat smear tests at the cost of the state following the news of several misdiagnosed cervical cancer cases.

.

It comes after Health Minister Simon Harris said he now can't have confidence in the managers of the screening programme.

In addition to seeking detailed information about the state of her health, they also asked her to specifically prove that she was likely to die earlier than expected as a result of her mishandled smear test.

Ms Phelan, a 43-year-old mother of two, has since been diagnosed with terminal cancer and the court case heard she may have only months to live.

A bit of the settlement will be paid into court and be held for the couple's two kids who are presently matured seven and 12.
