UK Housing Minister to Run Interior as Immigration Scandal Grows

April FrancisMay 01, 2018

May appointed Sajid Javid, a second-generation migrant whose parents came to Britain from Pakistan, as Home Secretary on Monday morning, plugging a hole left when predecessor Amber Rudd fell victim to a growing controversy over the treatment of the so-called Windrush generation of immigrants.

Mr Javid's appointment was welcomed by Cabinet colleagues.

Javid is the first black and minority ethnic MP to head one of the Great Offices of State in the United Kingdom.

After his appointment, Javid vowed to review the country's immigration policy to make sure it was fair and people were treated with "dignity and respect".

The group referred to as the "Windrush generation" relates to a ship named Windrush, which brought many of these Jamaican workers to United Kingdom shores in 1948. He is the Conservative party MP for Bromsgrove and has previously held business and culture portfolios in the United Kingdom government.

In a Sunday interview which looks like his audition for the job, or an official introduction before Ms Rudd was out of the door, Mr Javid acknowledged his Pakistani parents or indeed he could have fallen victim to the Home Office's wrongful and aggressive questioning of Commonwealth citizens' immigration status.

A leak on Friday said Ms Rudd was made aware of targets for deportations in last June, days the former Home secretary told MPs on the Home Affairs committee that the targets did not exist.

Shadow home secretary Diane Abbot added: "All roads lead back to Theresa May and her tenure as Home Secretary".

Huawei is being criminally investigated by the US Justice Department
On April 19, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said that the USA action against ZTE will damage itself. Should it be proven guilty of the same violation, it's likely to be fined like ZTE, perhaps even more.

According to Guardian, at one point Javid was widely seen as a future prime minister. "The real issue is the hostile environment policy that caused this crisis in the first place". "It immediately impacted me".

"Just like the Windrush generation", Javid wrote in "The Sunday Telegraph".

United Kingdom worldwide development secretary, Penny Mordaunt, takes on the additional role of minister for equalities.

But Downing Street stressed that, while Mrs May was aware of targets for illegal immigrant removals during her time as home secretary, she ceased receiving this operational information when she left the Home Office. Javid said he had asked to see details of the internal targets.

Her position on deportations came against the backdrop of her departments' handling of the "Windrush generation", men and women from the Caribbean who arrived legally in Britain in the 1950s and 60s, but who have struggled to prove their status amid the crackdown on illegal immigration.

In recent weeks, Rudd and May have apologised repeatedly to the Windrush generation, saying all pre-1973 Commonwealth immigrants who don't already have British citizenship will get it, and those affected will get compensation.

Rudd's departure - the fourth member of May's top leadership team to resign in the past six months - is a wicked blow for May.

During the referendum, while Ms Rudd was a leading and passionate advocate of continued European Union membership, Mr Javid said he had backed Remain only with "a heavy heart" having been wooed by both camps. India has also been on the United Kingdom government's radar in terms of illegal immigration, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's United Kingdom visit this month expected to result in a renewed memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the return of such migrants.
