Throughout the caravan's 3,220-kilometre odyssey from southern Mexico, its mostly Honduran, Salvadoran and Guatemalan members kept hoping they would ultimately get the chance to make their case for asylum in the United States.

President Donald Trump isn't the only one angry with Central American migrants encamped outside a USA port of entry on the southwest border, awaiting their chance to apply for asylum.

Dozens more remain just outside the entrance to the port of entry in a makeshift camp, waiting to plead their case. The crossing, the nation's busiest, processed about 50 asylum-seekers a day from October through February, suggesting the wait will be short.

On Monday, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions beefed up legal resources on the border, including more prosecutors and judges, to handle the groups of people from the caravan.

Half of the Central Americans from the so-called "immigrant caravan" have been allowed to apply for asylum in the U.S., according to lawyers on the scene.

"The migrant "caravan" that is openly defying our border shows how weak & ineffective US immigration laws are", Trump tweeted on Monday. As of Wednesday, about 65 of the Central American migrants had been allowed to pass through the San Ysidro pedestrian gate to apply for asylum, according to to immigration lawyers there.

To deal with an already existing backlog of cases, 18 supervising immigration judges are being assigned to hear cases in immigration courts near the border, both in person and through video teleconferencing.
