Google 'pauses' all 8th Amendment Referendum ads

April FrancisMay 11, 2018

Google is banning abortion-related advertising ahead of Ireland's referendum on the eighth amendment.

The vote takes place on May 25.

Comments that contain spam, advertising, vulgarity, threats of violence, racism, anti-Semitism, or personal or abusive attacks on other users may be removed and result in a ban.

The ban will include ads on YouTube and Google Adwords and will take effect from tomorrow.

Facebook says starting Tuesday it will "begin rejecting ads related to the referendum if they are being run by advertisers based outside of Ireland". In turn, Google will block all ads, where she would not have done.

Fighting periodically breaks out between those forces and Azerbaijani troops stationed on the other side of a demilitarized zone. Armen Sarkissian signed a decree earlier on Tuesday to appoint Nikol Pashinyan as Armenia's Prime Minister.

Google is now showing a range of ads about the Irish referendum, which will take place on 25 May. Although Irish law bans foreign donations to political campaigns, there had been concerns that overseas campaigners were still able to spend potentially unlimited sums buying adverts targeting Irish voters. The company, along with other social networks, has been heavily criticized for a failure to stop election-related ads from Russian Federation from appearing on users' feeds in the lead-up to the 2016 US elections.

All relevant ads will now be banned over the next 24 hours and will remain so for the duration of the campaign on Google and YouTube.

The high-profile nature of the contest - in addition to the heavy presence of U.S. technology companies in Dublin - has led large internet companies to closely monitor how their platforms are being used during the referendum run-up, with Facebook rushing to roll-out its news transparency platform for political adverts.

The news comes amid increasing focus on how online ads were used in campaigns like the Brexit referendum or the 2016 USA election.

The Save the Eighth campaign has been facing an uphill battle, since Ireland's political establishment has placed itself firmly in the Repeal camp, and foreign money has poured in from pro-abortion groups to back the Repeal lobby.
