Djokovic suffers another early exit in Madrid

May JohnsonMay 13, 2018

Novak Djokovic is trying his best to stay optimistic despite a disappointing start to his season.

After yesterday's hugely impressive win over Novak Djokovic, Edmund has another imposing-looking match-up against the world No 10 and clay-court specialist David Goffin.

Edmund's barnstorming forehand wreaked havoc throughout and it was no surprise when the winners tally showed the Briton 30-11 ahead by the time Djokovic sent a final backhand long.

The Spaniard was speaking after Djokovic was knocked out in the second round of the Madrid Open on Wednesday. "It's time to try and beat these guys and I was pleased how I managed my game". My serve got me through easy games and also got me out of some tricky situations.

"Obviously I'm disappointed from losing this match", Djokovic said after losing his second round clash. But, in the end, he played a little bit better and was more focused maybe.

"He was courageous enough to attack the balls when it mattered, and he deserved to win". He had a chance to go up a break early in the third set but lost five straight points to allow Edmund to come back from 0-40. "It's just a really good win for me", said Edmund. "It has obviously some consequences on your body that I never faced before, I never knew before, because I never had any surgery before".

In the first set, he was caught napping by the Brit as he raced to the lead, but we saw more of the glimpses of the Djokovic of old, as he handed back an equally emphatic lesson, levelling the match with a double-break cushion.

Officials with the agency wouldn't estimate the likelihood of such an explosion, but called it a "distinct possibility". She's anxious potential flight disruptions would strand them on the island.

Belgium's David Goffin, whom Edmund lost to on clay during Britain's run to Davis Cup glory in 2015, now awaits in the last 16.

The former World No. 1 made a drastic improvement in the second set, committing just three unforced errors. "I don't have any doubt that he's going to be back up at the highest level", Nadal said of Djokovic. "It was a very solid match in all aspects".

Spain's top seed Rafael Nadal also plays later on Thursday, when he meets Argentina's Diego Schwartzman. However, second seed Caroline Wozniacki and third-seeded home hope Garbine Muguruza both fell to shock defeats.

"I missed in some important moments", Halep said.

In a tough Madrid draw, he first beat Daniil Medvedev, 6-4, 6-0, then rose to the challenge of two-time champion Djokovic with calm but aggressive tennis. She will face her opponent's sister, sixth-seeded Karolina Pliskova, who defeated Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-3. Especially [at] such big tournaments against quality players, you've got to step in.

Thiem rallied to defeat Argentine Federico Delbonis 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 while Zverev cruised past Russia's Evgeny Donskoy 6-2, 7-5.
