Santa Barbara Police Ceremony Remembers Fallen Law Enforcement Officers

This week is National Police Week and the Kern County community is invited to an annual salute to our fallen law enforcement.

Too often we take for granted that law enforcement will be there in our time of need.

Since 1968, 54 officers from the Savannah area have lost their lives while on the job. He thanked all officers for "sharing a commitment larger than themselves". These loyal companions have given their lives to ensure their handlers, fellow officers, and citizens stay safe. "Our entire way of life depends on the rule of law", he said.

The City of Lafayette had a service of its own to honor fallen officers today. He concluded "my faith tells me that they did not die in vain".

One officer, N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper Chad Crouse, was honored for his hard work with the Crimestoppers "Officer of the Year" award. Attached to the flags were small blue ribbons-representing the "thin blue line".

The National Law Enforcement Museum at the Motorola Solutions Foundation Building - the nation's only museum that explores almost every facet of American law enforcement - announced today it will hold a grand opening ceremony on Thursday, October 11, and will open its doors to the public on Saturday, October 13, including a community celebration hosted by the Museum.

Lt. Thomas Tuck tries not to think about dying in the line of duty every time he hits the road for the Alex City police department, but it does cross his mind from time to time. Alex City has lost two of its finest in the line of duty; Officer Clarence Martin was shot to death in January 1976. The suspect later admitted that his goal was to kill an officer that night.

He has frequently advocated the death penalty, and on the campaign trail promised "one of the first things" he would do in office would be an executive order applying it to 'anybody killing a police man, a police woman, a police officer, anybody killing a police officer'.

The event recognizes officers, prosecutors, probation and parole officers and jailers. "As the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, I am personally committed to work in partnership with state and local law enforcement to develop strategies that work in our communities and make the streets safer for everyone, including law enforcement".
