Donald Trump threatens Kim Jong-un three weeks before summit

April FrancisMay 18, 2018

"Nothing has changed on North Korea that we know of", the president said.

Some American observers saw North Korea's threats earlier this week as a return to the cycle of offering dialogue and then demanding concessions, which doomed more than 20 years of USA attempts to solve the nuclear showdown with the isolated state.

"We are going to do everything we can to come to a successful meeting, but we are not going to back away from the objective of that meeting which is complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea", Mr Bolton had said. And Bolton sitting beside Trump, and across the table from Kim Jong Un in Shanghai, may be inhibiting.

In quotes published by the North's official Korean Central News Agency, Ri Son Gwon, chairman of a North Korean agency that deals with inter-Korean affairs, accused South Korea's government of being "an ignorant and incompetent group devoid of the elementary sense of the present situation, of any concrete picture of their dialogue partner and of the ability to discern the present trend of the times".

In the future, the USA will stop futilely imploring allies to do more for their own defense and will begin telling them that their defense is primarily their own responsibility.

South Korea intends to continue discussions with North Korea to hold high-level talks North Korea cancelled on Wednesday, Blue House said in a separate statement yesterday. "North Korea has taken a similar approach to talks with the United States before, but the Trump administration, either willfully or by accident, simply hasn't paying attention to the details".

As for having Americans come into his country, pick up his nuclear weapons, remove them and begin intrusive inspections to ensure he has neither nuclear bombs nor the means to produce, deliver or hide them, that would be tantamount to a surrender by Kim.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim are still scheduled to meet in Singapore on June 12, at least for the time being.

Senior officials from the two Koreas were to sit down at a border village on Wednesday to discuss how to implement their leaders' agreements to reduce military tensions along their heavily fortified border and improve overall ties, but the North canceled the meeting.

"He would be there, he would be running his country, his country would be very rich", Trump said.

Speaking at an Oval Office meeting with Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Trump also said he will not discuss United States troop levels in South Korea during his meeting with Mr Kim.

North Korea details plans to dismantle nuclear test site this month
Experts have said the pledge to dismantle the test site is a big step forward but verifying it will be hard . North Korea has invited the outside world to witness the dismantling of its nuclear facilities before.

"A USA government expert on North Korea said Kim Jong-un may also be trying to gauge whether Mr. Trump is willing to walk away from the meeting", Reuters reported.

In other words, Trump and his national security team have put Kim in a corner, offering him peace, security and prosperity, but only if he first denuclearizes completely, verifiably and irreversibly. "Now that model would take place if we don't make a deal, most likely", Trump said.

"We can not let that country have nukes".

Yet, thanks to Trump's threats and refusal to accept a "frozen conflict" on the Korean peninsula, the makings of a real deal are present, if Trump does not make the ideal the enemy of the good.

Risch, the Republican senator, said, "The world needs to try this to see if it works".

"The best thing he could do is to make a deal", Trump said of Kim.

But foreign policy analysts have said that the policy is faltering amid Kim's diplomatic outreach to South Korea and China.

The U.S. has long stressed the importance of China's role in coaxing Pyongyang into changing its course. The allies say the drills are defensive in nature.

South Korea's presidential Blue House said it would seek to bridge the gap between Washington and Pyongyang. "I think what the North Koreans did - and it's pretty smart - they decided not to keep negotiating". As a result, North Korea is now in a position to humiliate Trump if he fails to extract major concessions from the Kim dictatorship.

How does North Korea see it?
