Bryson DeChambeau wins Memorial Tournament at second play-off hole

Lydia FlemingJun 04, 2018

Tiger Woods needed something special on Sunday in Round 4 of the 2018 Memorial Tournament to have a real chance at picking up his sixth win at Muirfield Village.

Overnight leader DeChambeau drained a 12-foot downhill birdie putt at the second playoff hole, the par-four 18th, at Muirfield Village Golf Club while An settled for a par.

DeChambeau missed three-foot birdie putts on the ninth and 15th holes.

Cantlay would go on to bogey the 14th and 17th holes to miss out on the play-off, but Stanley and An suddenly re-emerged as serious contenders when DeChambeau missed his 10-footer for par at the 14th.

Bryson DeChambeau shot a six-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead at the Memorial Tournament in OH on Saturday, while Tiger Woods made a charge with a blistering front nine before fading coming home.

"No matter if you're one back or tied for the lead every hole is an opportunity to make a birdie and that's just what I'm going to try and do every single day".

Woods will attempt to equal the tournament's largest 54-hole comeback at five shots off the pace, but will no doubt draw from starting the final round four shots back during his 2012 Memorial victory.

After hitting his second shot on the par-5 just inside 100 yards, Woods holed out his third shot for eagle - and the crowd went insane.

Woods found himself tied for the lead at 11-under after a birdie at No. 15, but struggled over the final three holes. "If I just keep building on this, with how I'm hitting it right now, I'm in good shape for two weeks from now".

However, DeChambeau rolled in a nine-footer on a similar line to the one he missed in regulation play, to take the title.

"I've been driving the ball well, which I think is the key to this golf course." the American said.

"I shot 68 today but, again, that's probably the highest score I could have possibly shot today", he said.

Cantlay also had a 66 to get to 13 under par.

"I was releasing the putter beautifully early", Woods said, adding: "My toe was moving nicely". Still steaming from his last putt, he was asked if his game was good enough to win.

Woods is four shots off the lead heading into Sunday's action. Thomas, Johnson (No. 2), Justin Rose (No. 3) and Jordan Spieth (No. 5) have a mathematical chance of reaching No. 1. After his ball squirted out some 30 yards, he was still in deep rough and came up short, and his pitch for par hit the cup and hopped a few feet by.

However, Woods shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday in round three to back up his 5-under 67 on Friday.
