Serena, Venus Williams Bounced from Doubles Competition at 2018 French Open

May JohnsonJun 04, 2018

Williams, the three-time French Open champion and 23-time major victor, has vented her anger at Sharapova's claims that she had wept after losing the 2004 Wimbledon title match.

Williams, 36, and Sharapova, 31, will meet in the fourth round on Monday.

In her next presentation, Sharapova, champion of five Grand Slam tournaments, will face the victor of the match between famous American Serena Williams and German Julia Georges.

Indeed, if she fulfils the majority of predictions here - having looked devastatingly good thrashing the world No 6 Karolina Pliskova in the third round - and actually beats Williams, it is hard to imagine she will be able to contain that ice-cool facade for long. "And I think that as long as it's moving in the right direction, I know I will get there".

Spanish third seed Muguruza, the 2016 victor in Paris and the reigning Wimbledon champion, fired 15 winners past Stosur, the 34-year-old 2010 runner-up and former US Open champion.

Williams is not back to being that player yet.

Heading into Wimbledon in 2013, they took swipes at each other's personal lives. Serena lost just five first serve points and won 73 percent of her total service points.

Angelique Kerber is bidding to reach the French Open quarterfinals for the second time, having previously reached that stage in 2012 before losing to Sara Errani. Both have been ranked No 1.

Serena leads her head-to-head record with Sharapova 19-2, with the Russian´s last win coming at the 2004 WTA Tour Championships - before even the birth of Twitter and YouTube.

"Quite frankly, she's probably a favorite in this match, for sure", Williams told reporters.

Danica Patrick Crashes At Indy 500, Final Race Of Her Career
And although Sunday marked the end of Patrick's dream of winning the Indy 500, she spoke fondly of her history on the track. They just didn't come on race day. "Please, Roger, let me go back", Castroneves said after stepping out of his vehicle .

She next plays seventh-seeded Caroline Garcia of France.

There have been clashes over their private lives, while Sharapova claimed a year ago in her book that Serena "hates" her for hearing her cry after the 2004 Wimbledon final.

The last time they played was in the 2016 Australian Open quarterfinals, Sharapovas final appearance before her 15-month drug suspension.

Williams was asked about Sharapovas book, which was published a year ago. And who waits 14 years to ask Serena Williams a boring, sexist and racist question about Maria Sharapova? "I think Serena hated me for being the skinny kid who beat her, against all odds, at Wimbledon", said Sharapova in her book. "I'm playing tougher opponents and I'm hanging in there", said Williams, whose trophy collection includes three Suzanne Lenglen Cups. “I was, like, ‘Oh, OK, I didnt expect to be reading a book about me — that wasnt necessarily true.”.

Sharapova and Williams have a tense history, as words were aimed at each other in press conferences in the past.

Other women moving into the fourth round included 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza, two-time French Open finalist Simona Halep, two-time major title victor Angelique Kerber and reigning U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens.

"Nothing against Serena's outfit, looks pretty cool actually", she tweeted. She next plays 16th-seeded Elise Mertens, who won 6-3, 6-1 against No. 24 Daria Gavrilova.

She has dominated the headlines in Paris as much for her play - she came back from a set and break down to beat Ashleigh Barty in the second round - as for her striking all-black catsuit.

The careless errors were largely absent.
