Manafort attempted to tamper with potential witnesses, Mueller says in court filing

April FrancisJun 05, 2018

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort made several attempts to tamper with witnesses in his ongoing criminal cases, prosecutors said Monday as they asked a federal judge to consider revoking his house arrest.

According to a motion filed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office, Manafort contacted witnesses by phone and an encrypted text messaging app in an attempt to secure "materially false testimony".

An FBI special agent wrote that the communication with witnesses was quote "in an effort to influence their testimony - and to otherwise hide evidence". Then he wrote: "We should talk".

The motion includes a sworn declaration by an FBI agent who is attached to the Mueller investigation, supporting the allegation of witness tampering.

Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, leaves the Federal District Court after a hearing, late last month, in Washington.

Federal investigators have accused Donald Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, of tampering with potential witnesses while on bail ahead of his federal bank fraud and tax case.

Asked if that marks a dramatic change in his thinking, given his recent hard-fought court battle, Rotondo answered succinctly. He told the Syracuse TV station he was moving into an Airbnb and had "more or less" said goodbye to his mother and father.

Also that week, on February 23, Manafort's longtime deputy Rick Gates agreed to plead guilty to charges of conspiracy and lying to investigators and would cooperate with prosecutors, making Manafort's case an even more hard one to overcome.

According to a February indictment, Manafort in 2012 and 2013 used offshore accounts to wire more than 2 million euros to pay the former politicians, who were described as independent actors instead of paid lobbyists. "I have made clear that they worked in Europe".

Manafort was in charge of the Trump campaign from June through August 2016, but left the team after a secret ledger detailing how he received $12.7 million dollars in payments from pro-Russian political operatives in Ukraine was discovered.

"You can imagine in a case of this significance watched this closely the special counsel's team is not going to do this unless they have pretty darn ironclad evidence that Manafort is trying to corrupt or co-opt these witnesses", Schiff said on CNN's "Cuomo Primetime". If true, Manafort's bail could be revoked.

The former campaign chairman has been charged with money laundering, foreign lobbying violations, conspiracy against the US, and tax fraud, as well as other financial crimes.

Amid threats of a potential subpoena for Mr. Trump to appear before the special counsel's team for an interview in the Russian Federation investigation, Gingrich said such a subpoena would lead to a Supreme Court testing.
