Pompeo appeared to address that sort of North Korean concern on Monday, saying "President Trump recognizes Chairman Kim's desire for security and is prepared to ensure a North Korea free of weapons of mass destruction is also a secure North Korea".

Bringing the Korean War to a formal end 65 years after hostilities ceased will also be on the table at the first-ever summit between a North Korean leader and a sitting US president of its "imperialist enemy".

The leader of North Korea has arrived to Singapore in what has been a meticulously coordinated scheme shrouded in mystery.

Trump and Kim landed in a city teeming with media and onlookers of all stripes, from foreign policy analysts like Kelly and Enos to former basketball star Dennis Rodman, who claims to be a friend of the two leaders.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, at the Istana in Singapore on Sunday. Trump and Kim planned to meet one-on-one for most of an hour- joined only by translators. Kim can expect things like hand-cut crystal chandeliers, hand-painted chinoiserie silk wallpapers, 600-threadcount bed linens, paintings by Marc Chagall, a baby grand piano, separate living and dining rooms, an office, gym, and, of course, the hotel's renowned (among rich people) butler service.

"I think we're going to have a relationship, and it will start on June 12", Trump said at the time.

"If diplomacy doesn't move in the right direction, sanctions will increase", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says.

Later, Pompeo shared a picture of Trump speaking with the staff of the U.S. Embassy in Singapore.

The White House says Trump now plans to depart Singapore on Tuesday evening ahead of schedule. Its outcome could prove pivotal in determining whether the two nations pursue a lasting peace or a fresh military conflict.

"It's about attitude", Trump said. He told reporters he wasn't sure if he would meet Kim in Singapore. But on the eve of the summit, he altered his schedule, opting to return at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday after a full day of meetings with Kim - nearly 15 hours earlier than previously anticipated. "I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people and he has that opportunity".

Before flying to Singapore, Mr. Trump was in Canada for the G-7 summit with leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the U.K. All seven leaders had worked out a joint statement stressing the importance of a rules-based worldwide trading system.
