Trump and Kim Stir Confusion About What They Actually Agreed To

Lydia FlemingJun 13, 2018

On Monday, KCNA, Rodong Sinmun and state television used the same photographs of Mr Kim's arrival in Singapore and his meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana.

Though the leaders mentioned in a joint statement the need for the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the wording is ominously vague and, it could be argued, doesn't go any further than the North's previous promises.

"North Korea seems to be highlighting this as one of Kim Jong-un's greatest feats yet and lauding itself for keeping the North Korean regime from collapsing while succeeding in shaking up the U.S". The president would not elaborate on these hazy measures of time.

In Pyongyang, the North Korean autocrat woke up to state media's enthusiastic claims of a victorious meeting with the US president; photos of him standing side-by-side with Trump on the world stage were splashed across newspapers.

Hay also reported that South Korea is "caught by surprise" at Trump's decision to halt the military exercises between the two allies.

Although human rights was not included in the joint statement signed by Trump and Kim, the United States president said he raised the issue and he believed the North Korean leader wanted to "do the right thing". He is also described as immediately agreeing to Trump's request to repatriate the remains of US and foreign soldiers who were taken as prisoners of war or were missing in action following the 1950-53 Korean war-a request that, according to Trump, was included towards the end of the talks.

"Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea". Others might say it's Moon who is probably more deserving, since he was pushing Trump and Kim toward peace when they were still both threatening nuclear war.

If he was forced to negotiate by US pressure, it certainly wasn't obvious.

US Senator Cory Gardner told reporters that Vice President Mike Pence promised in a briefing for Republican senators that the Trump administration would "clarify what the president talked about" regarding joint military exercises.

United boss Jose Mourinho has stressed for much of the last year that he is keen to keep Fellaini at the club - but he started just two league games since the turn of the year.

There was no immediate comment about sanctions from the U.S. side. It states that Trump will lift sanctions against North Korea "with advance in improving the mutual relationship through dialogue and negotiation".

The encounter between Trump and Kim Jong-un led to a joint statement in which both countries pledged to pursue the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea typically has no kind words for Donald Trump.

"Only five months ago, based on my conversations with this administration, I thought we were headed down an inexorable path toward a devastating war", Victor Cha, who was considered for the role of USA ambassador to South Korea for nearly a year by the Trump administration before being passed over, wrote in The New York Times on Tuesday.

Trump didn't offer much assurance on the question of how to confirm that North Korea had complied with any deal. Trump, it added, had expressed his "understanding" of the stance and had conveyed "his intention to halt" the exercises. Asked about this yesterday, Trump said: "I think he wants to get it done".

On the huge domestic issue of Japanese citizens kidnapped by North Korea decades ago, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe welcomed that Trump had apparently brought it up with Kim, but there was no tangible progress.

The remark was part of a blast of tweets that Trump fired off even as Air Force One touched down at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland outside the United States capital and brought Trump back home.

Kim at one point told Trump that many people around the world would see their meeting as a kind of fantasy, as if it the event was a "science fiction movie". Despite claims and predictions, Trump has returned the USA to the leadership of the world. "They did not record it".
