Manchin urges against overturning Roe v. Wade

Seasoned appellate Judge Brett Kavanaugh and recent circuit court appointee Judge Amy Coney Barrett are leading candidates in President Donald Trump's search for a Supreme Court nominee, according to a Thursday Los Angeles Times report. Trump previously vowed to only nominate Supreme Court candidates who will work to overturnRoe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion in the country.

"I'm not going to ask them that question", Trump said.

While Trump says he will review an existing list of 25 possible nominees, aides said only a few names can be considered serious contenders.

Trump said he would probably interview six to seven candidates, while also saying he had narrowed his list to "about five" candidates.

A key Democratic senator was encouraging Trump not to pick a Supreme Court nominee who's openly interested in overturning Roe v. Wade.

A confirmation vote for Garland was never held, as the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell determined it was too soon before the presidential election. Flake told The Arizona Republic he would make a determination on voting for Trump's nominee after reviewing the pick. He also met with the three Democratic senators who broke ranks to support Gorsuch, Joe Donnelly, Heidi Heitkamp, and Joe Manchin. Many who favor the decision fear that a more conservative replacement for Kennedy, often a swing vote on social issues, could endanger such rights, while Trump's base has hoped he would appoint someone to overturn the decision. "He said he'd like the job", Trump said.

"While liberals have been able to pick off a number of crucial victories in years past on hotly contested matters, they will nearly always fall short in the future without Justice Kennedy on the bench now". The Senate votes to confirm or deny judicial candidates for federal courts, including Supreme Court nominees. "Arabella & me at the Supreme Court today", she wrote.

After blocking a circuit court nominee from Georgia earlier this month, Flake told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that he planned to block appellate court judges in exchange for a Senate vote on reining in Trump's tariff powers.

On Thursday, Trump brought Murkowski and five other senators to the White House to discuss the vacancy.

A fourth woman on the court would be a United States record.

According to the Journal the list has already been whittled down to a half-dozen names, and people involved in the White House process expect an announcement before Trump departs for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit that begins in Brussels on July 11.

As many conservatives saw it, Justice Anthony Kennedy's 1988 ascent to the nation's highest bench was reason for only muted celebration, if any, because he settled into the seat that his nominator, President Ronald Reagan, had first tried to fill with the conservatives' favorite jurist, Robert Bork.

One of the political adages Democrats and leftists need to internalize in the coming years is: "It's extremely hard to take something away from people once they have it".
