Trump has chosen his Supreme Court nominee, source says

Wayne CurryJul 10, 2018

President Donald Trump nominated Barrett, and the Senate confirmed her on October 31, 2017, to the federal bench. Trump tweeted on Sunday.

The announcement will take place at 9pm on Monday, July 9.

But the president has also been impressed by Kavanaugh, the most experienced judge on the list, having penned almost 300 decisions on the second-most powerful court in the country; as well as Barrett, a devout Catholic, who has become a hero of religious conservatives after having her membership in a conservative religious organization questioned by Sen.

The most significant and far-reaching damage Trump will do to our environment and public health will come from his Supreme Court picks. For example, on the campaign trail, Trump promised his base that if he was elected he would appoint justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

"It's an historic decision". But Senate Democrats held up his confirmation for three years, accusing him of being a Bush political operative.

"They're good judges", Blunt said on NBC's "Meet the Press". "He has put a litmus test on the supreme court nominee" over abortion, she said.

Trump spoke to reporters Sunday afternoon as he concluded a weekend in New Jersey spent deliberating his decision at his private golf club.

Besides records from his 12 years as an appellate judge, Kavanaugh was a top adviser to President George W. Bush and worked for Kenneth Starr on the years-long Whitewater investigation into Bill and Hillary Clinton.

We're told the four finalists are federal appeals court judges Thomas Hardiman, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett and Raymond Kethledge.

The source told Reuters that Amy Coney Barrett of IN, a Trump-appointed judge on the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, was still IN contention but that the Republican president had been asking more questions about the other two, who have more extensive judicial records.

Kethledge also has supporters.

Kavanaugh's time in Bush administrations, for example, could count against him with a President who is suspicious of the political establishment. Second, he has solid conservative credentials, as you can see from his rulings over the years. Dianne Feinstein of California said something to Barrett like "the dogma" - meaning Catholic teaching and faith - "lives loudly within you." Sen.

Amul Thapar Not On Donald Trump's Shortlist For US Supreme Court
Prominent Indian-American judge Amul Thapar has failed to make it to the shortlist, of the three candidates, from which U.S. Leo said, however, that ultimately Trump would succeed at lining up conservative support for anyone he selected.

Here's why: Kavanaugh's court rarely issues opinions on Monday.

Still, for conservative activists, such distinctions between the potential nominees are quibbles.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Democrats have little leverage as they try to halt the nomination - though the court's rightward lurch could stoke liberal turnout in the midterm elections in which the House of Representatives is in play.

Officially, the White House hasn't indicated a preferred candidate and isn't expected to give away many clues until the announcement.

That could imperil support from Republican moderates in the Senate, especially Alaska's Lisa Murkowski and Maine's Susan Collins.

"This next nomination will be the swing vote to overturn Roe v Wade and equally important to eviscerate the protections of millions of Americans who suffer from existing conditions and other healthcare rights along with workers' rights, gay rights, voting rights".

Ahead of the decision, Trump has built suspense about whom his pick will be. It will feature cable and digital advertising in states including Alabama, Indiana, North Dakota and West Virginia. "We don't know who the nominee is going to be yet", Sen. "And I believe this person will do a great job", Trump said, according to ABC News.

"I don't think anyone should expect me to simply vote yes for this nominee, just simply because my state may be more conservative than others", Jones said.

Outside groups on both sides of the aisle are expected to apply enormous pressure to the three senators as they look to sway them during what's expected to be the most expensive Supreme Court confirmation fight in history.

The appointment will not change the ideological breakdown of a court that already has a 5-4 conservative majority, but nevertheless could move the court to the right.
