Chris Froome has been pulled off his bike by police after a hard 17th stage of the Tour de France which saw him fall further behind teammate Geraint Thomas in the race for the yellow jersey.

Thomas, who took third place 47 seconds off the pace, now leads Dumoulin by 1:59 and Froome by 2:31 and is widely expected to hand Team Sky their sixth Tour title in seven years.

Four-time champion Chris Froome and overall leader Geraint Thomas were among those trying to clear their eyes before resuming the race, according to multiple reports.

Thomas is now a heavy favourite to claim his maiden Tour de France victory following his performance in stage 17, which is the shortest stage in the modern era of the race.

Twice a Tour runner-up, Quintana arrived at the start in Noirmoutier hoping he would finally be able to prevail with the help of a strong squad featuring Alejandro Valverde and Chris Froome's former teammate at Sky, Mikel Landa. We don't feel unsafe, it's just unfortunate sometimes but I think everyone is doing the best they can.

The Tour will finish in Paris on Sunday, where Froome is bidding to make history by winning it for the fifth time and double Olympic champion Thomas is attempting to win it for the very first time.

It was Quintana's second career stage victory in the Tour, having also won a leg in 2013.

"I think he's got nearly a two-minute lead on Dumoulin, which I think is a pretty comfortable lot", Froome said.

"The Tour is promoted as the world's greatest annual global sporting event and if that's what you want to host and if you want the best riders in the world to come to your country to take part, then maybe treat them with a little more respect", he said. "We're riding so well as a team, that's the reason I'm in this jersey".

The Tour de France is several weeks of gruelling cycling and a test of strength, both physical and mental, that it's any wonder people come out alive doing it. Philippe Gilbert managed to break his knee cap and cycle for another 60km.

"I just felt my throat and nose were burning, eyes were burning afterward", Froome said.

A Frenchman, Alaphilippe also won the 10th stage and is wearing the polka-dot jersey of the mountains classification leader.

"Geraint deserves to be in the yellow jersey, he's earned it", said Froome. We recon all these stages but you never know what's coming up.

The race was stopped for 15 minutes after the incident, which came 29 kilometres into the 218km stage from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon.

Riders who have finished the race often descend down the final climb of a stage, even when the race is still on.
