Trump asks Kelly to remain chief of staff until 2020

April FrancisAug 03, 2018

Mr. Kelly told colleagues at a staff meeting Monday that President Trump asked him to stay and that he planned to do so, according to multiple reports.

"We didn't cover ourselves in glory", Kelly told a gathering of reporters last March.

Kelly has seen his status as chief of staff diminished in recent months, with the President circumventing numerous policies and protocols the retired Marine Corps general put in place when he entered the West Wing a year ago.

Kelly sought to bring rigid order and discipline to the West Wing, but Trump chafed under his restrictions, and Kelly found it impossible to contain the chaos that often is created by this president.

Still, Trump is known as a mercurial boss, whose feelings on key staffers can shift rapidly. Trump was reportedly having discussions with staff on who could replace Kelly.

Almost a month after Porter's resignation, Kelly admitted that he mishandled his response to the allegations against Porter.

Hamas vows revenge after Israeli raid kills 3 militants
The protests also demand a "right of return" for descendants of Palestinian refugees to ancestral homes in what is now Israel . Israeli strikes on Gaza killed three Hamas members after which nine rockets were fired into Israel.

"Congratulations to General John Kelly".

The move comes as Kelly marked one year at the White House - an anniversary that prompted inevitable speculation about whether he will stay or go.

About a year later, Kelly is nearly useless, having lost respect among staffers and exerting little control over Trump's impulsive agenda, decisions, and tweeting. "He's a wonderful man".

A source speaking to the Wall Street Journal said that "the plan" was to have Kelly remain until 2020 but that it could always change.

The White House has seen a record number of departures during Trump's year-and-a-half in the Oval Office.
