Hoops coach pleads not guilty for punch that killed tourist

A Wake Forest University assistant basketball coach has been charged in connection with the death of tourist who mistook his SUV for an Uber. The man later died.

A Wake Forest Demon Deacons basketball assistant coach has been charged with assault in the death of a tourist in Queens.

Jones then slugged the 35-year-old Szabo in the head causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head on the pavement.

Szabo died of his injuries Tuesday.

A person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press that Szabo may have been drunkenly knocking on vehicle windows before Jones allegedly confronted him.

Relatives say Szabo tapped on the window of Jones' SUV while searching for his Uber after leaving a family wedding around 1:15 a.m. Sunday. NY police sought out the public's help on social media after the incident.

Jones is "hoping and praying that he'll be able to continue at some point with his life", the attorney said. His attorney calls the encounter a "tragic accident".

The investigation is ongoing, and charges against Jones could be upgraded, police said.

The New York Daily News and television station WPIX reported that Jamill Jones, a Wake coach since May 2017, was placed under arrest Thursday in Queens, N.Y., after he surrendered to police with his lawyer by his side.

Jones was released without bail. He was ordered to return to court on October 2. His family has said he was looking for his ride.

The coach's next court appearance is scheduled for October 2, the Queens district attorney's office said.
