Wang Shouwen, vice-minister of commerce, will lead a delegation to the U.S. at the end of August to discuss bilateral trade issues with a team led by David Malpass, secretary of treasury for worldwide affairs, the Chinese Commerce Ministry said in a statement today.

There also remains a wide gap between the two sides over Washington's demands that Beijing improve market access and intellectual property protections for USA companies, and slash a $375 billion trade deficit with China.

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He held talks with US Commerce Minister Wilbur Ross in Beijing in June.

The president has argued that the tariffs are necessary in order to secure better trade deals, even though the US has yet to establish any new agreement since the duties were put in place.

Amid a stalemate in the trade war with the US, China will send a top official to Washington this month to resume the high-level dialogue to resolve the deadlock over President Donald Trump's demand to drastically reduce the $375 billion trade deficit. Earlier this month, China announced a list of $60 billion worth of US imports it plans to apply tariffs on, after Trump ordered officials to consider imposing a 25 percent tax on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, up from an initial 10 percent rate. The SCI 300 Index was up 0.59 per cent by mid-morning, having fallen as much as 1.8 per cent shortly after open. Beijing retaliated by imposing the same percentage of retaliatory tariffs on 545 USA items, also worth $34 billion. Another $16 billion in levies will be effective later in August.

But less than 10 days later, the White House said it would push forward on planned tariffs on $50 billion of Chinese imports and press ahead with restrictions on investments by Chinese companies in the U.S.
