U.S. media counters Trump with #EnemyOfNone campaign

April FrancisAug 17, 2018

The "fake news media" is the opposition party, President Trump declared today, but across the United States some 350 newspapers from the New York Times to the Kentucky Times Tribune have launched an unprecedented joint campaign to counter the President's attacks on the media.

Thursday's edition of the Boston Globe features a full spread taking on President Donald Trump's fake news claims.

He also accused the press of "pushing a political agenda or just plain trying to hurt people".

While Boston police say they do not believe the threat was "super serious", the Federal Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation.

According to the Boston Globe, Thursday's participating newspapers are from big and small markets, including in states and counties where Trump won during the 2016 presidential election.

The Fayetteville Observer said it hopes Mr Trump will stop making such accusations, "but we're not holding our breath".

Trump has frequently criticized journalists and described news reports that contradict his opinion or policy positions as fake news.

The Morning News of Savannah, Georgia, said it was a confidant of the people. Both the Chronicle and Baltimore Sun said that it plays into the hands of Trump and his supporters who think the media is out to get him.

Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes pose in Everton shirts
Mina and Gomes join former team-mate Lucas Digne at Goodison, following his move £20m move from Barcelona earlier in the window. Colombian centre-back Mina will join in a deal worth €30.25 million with another €1.5 in potential add-ons, Barcelona said.

In response to The Boston Globe's request, more than 300 news outlets across the US, along with a few worldwide publications, printed editorials promoting the free press with many using the hashtag #EnemyofNone.

"We can't let statements by the president declaring that the press is the enemy of the people go unchallenged", Schatz said. The president even admitted in a tweet in May 2018 that he considered any negative news regarding his person or administration "fake news".

"It's not that we disagree with concerns about the president's language in speeches and on social media", the editorial board said.

Trump denounced the effort on Twitter, saying the Globe was in collusion with other newspapers.

The Globe's editorial board made the appeal last week, urging newspaper editorial boards to produce opinion pieces about Trump's attacks on the media.

Other newspapers joining the campaign said Trump's attacks diminish the importance of journalists in their communities.

"The messages in today's newspapers are best read not as a drift toward war footing, but rather as a reminder that journalism is important work", wrote Pete Vernon in the Columbia Journalism Review.
