Suspect Detained After Shots Fired at US Embassy in Turkey

Bullets hit a window at the embassy's security post following the attack which occurred at 5 a.m. local time.

Shots were fired at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey early Monday in an apparent drive-by shooting.

The embassy closed this week for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. "We have no reports of any injuries and we are investigating the details" embassy spokesman David Gainer said.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Turkey thanked the Turkish police and government for its efforts in nabbing the suspects.

Ankara's governor said suspects have not yet been identified.

The incident comes as ties between Ankara and Washington are in an unprecedented crisis over the continued detention of Pastor Andrew Brunson.

The Turkish government agreed to drop terrorism charges against the pastor in exchange of the USA government dropping fines totaling billions of dollars against the bank. It said one bullet hit a window but no one was hurt, and police were searching for the vehicle and suspects.

This is always the way, but it is clear that defensively we suffered three goals but also we had chances to do more goals. Mkhitaryan followed Aubameyang's example by somehow also blazing over an nearly identical chance from close range.

A bullet mark could be clearly seen in the window of the security booth, an AFP journalist at the scene said.

Early Monday morning, someone fired six shots from a vehicle driving by the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey.

The attack coincided with a deepening row between Ankara and Washington over the trial of a United States pastor in Turkey. Omer Celik, a spokesman for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), called the incident an "open provocation", without elaborating further. "Turkey is a safe country and all foreign missions are under the guarantee of the laws".

The Turkish lira has lost 39 percent of its value against the US dollar since the beginning of the year and was hurt further by recent USA tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum.

Turkey's Vice President Fuat Oktay said the duties had been raised in response to the United States administration's "deliberate attacks on our economy".

Those who thought they could bring Turkey to its knees through the foreign currency exchange rate "will soon see they are mistaken", Erdogan added.

At least one suspect was wounded in a shooting outside the US consulate in Istanbul in 2015.
