Peter Dutton fails to rule out second leadership challenge against Malcolm Turnbull

Kerry GarnerAug 24, 2018

Turnbull ruled out any retribution against ministers suspected of supporting Dutton and said he had invited Dutton to remain in the senior security portfolio.

"In relation to media stories today, just to make very clear, the Prime Minister has my support and I support the policies of the Government", Dutton tweeted.

The conservatives, led by Dutton and former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, have taken issue with Turnbull's plan to embed an emissions reduction target of 26 percent within the legislation, arguing that the policy should be exclusively focused on reducing electricity prices. In the situation that the government's in now, and destined to lose the next election to Labor, astoundingly, maybe Tony Abbott would've been the alternative to take on this position.

"I do think there is a danger for him", she said.

"If we are fighting amongst ourselves, guess what, when the voters go to the election, they'll mark us down as they should", Mr Laundy said.

Now effectively neutered and unlikely to proceed, the NEG will become a millstone for Turnbull as he tries to rally his diminishing support base.

Malcolm Turnbull has rejected claims that changes to his energy policy are aimed at holding off a leadership challenge.

Are you anxious about another challenge against you and what do you say to the disloyalty of the Cabinet Ministers who voted against you?

I believed I had the best prospects to leading Liberal Party to success at next election. Disunity undermines the ability of a government to get its job done and we can not allow internal issues to undermine our work, or to create a real risk that Bill Shorten will be the prime minister.

And the former Manchester United star was happy to receive the No.7 from Juan Cuadrado after a brief chat with the Colombian winger.

Mr Joyce quit as Deputy PM because of the allegations but it was expected that if they were determined to be unfounded, he could return as Nationals leader.

"This was a trial run and I expect them (Dutton and supporters) to do it again in September", he told AFP, adding that it was all about "revenge and ego".

Malcom Turnbull is bracing for a second attack on his leadership following a swathe of resignation offers from his front bench, as rival Peter Dutton ramps up his policy agenda.

Asked about a leadership change, Mr Morrison said: "That is not a scenario that I'm anticipating and it's not one that I'm supportive of". "I have gone through what my job is now and that is to make sure that I can help the coalition win the next election", he said.

"These are people who, for their own reasons, have chose to offer their resignation but I know that the Prime Minister is working very hard to heal the divisions and to bring the party together", Ms Bishop said. It is widely known that Mr Dutton and Ms Bishop do not get on.

A spokesperson for Mr Dutton said: "Mr Dutton's legal advice clearly states there is no breach of section 44".

A parade of ministers who voted against Mr Turnbull were asked in parliament whether they supported him, and all answered yes.

The ruling coalition's battle plan, which it repeated as it tried to close ranks after the leadership vote, is to focus on stopping Shorten from becoming prime minister. "Peter Dutton is considering resigning from cabinet and launching a leadership bid", Channel 9's political editor Chris Ulhmann told Today this morning.
