USA imposes fresh sanctions for Russian cyber-related activity

Oscar PerryAug 24, 2018

Since January 2017, the Trump administration has sanctioned 217 Russian-related individuals and entities for a broad range of conduct.

He will today challenge the European Union to "stand shoulder to shoulder" with the USA by imposing new sanctions on Russian Federation over the Salisbury novichok poisoning.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Tuesday sharply criticized new US sanctions against Russia linked to North Korea.

"I hope that our American partners will realise that this policy has no future at some point and we can start cooperating in a normal way".

Because of the sanctions, foreign direct investment in Russian Federation fell in 2013 by more than 5%. The new targets are two Russian shipping companies and six ships, and one of the ships is now at anchor in South Korea.

"Those who don't share our values, need to know that there will always be a serious price to pay if red lines are crossed by the territorial incursions, the use of banned weapons, or increasingly cyberattacks", Hunt said Tuesday prior to talks with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The department said the buyer of the oil was the Workers' Party of Korea Office, which the US described as engaging "in illicit economic activities for North Korean leadership" in a statement issued Tuesday.

The sanctions target Iran's trade in gold and other precious metals, its purchases of U.S. dollars and its auto industry. He said that if Iran ever negotiates with the United States, it will not be with the current USA administration.

U.S. President Donald Trump indicated on Monday that he would consider lifting U.S. sanctions on Russian Federation if Moscow took some actions in such areas as Syria or Ukraine.

Earlier, the US imposed sanctions on two Russians, one Russian company and one Slovakian firm for what Washington said were their actions to help another Russian company avoid sanctions over the country's malicious cyber-related activities, Reuters recalls.

Trump has also slammed Russia's plan for a gas pipeline to Germany called Nord Stream 2, and some in Washington have called for sanctions to target the project, an idea Moscow calls unfair competition.

"Overall foreign direct investment in Russian Federation fell in 2013 by more than 5%, and a tangible reduction fell on the share of direct investment from the United States, they decreased in 2013 by 80%", - said the Deputy Minister. Russian Federation has also continued reducing its holdings of USA treasuries.

"Such aggressive and malign behavior undermines the global order that keeps us safe", Hunt was to tell an audience at the US Institute of Peace, a nonpartisan think tank, according to excerpts provided by the Foreign Office.

Nevertheless, Russian President Vladimir Putin remains ready to resolve the problems facing the two countries, he said.
