Serena Williams seeded 17th for US Open

The 36-year-old moves from 26th to 17th, knocking numerous rivals - including 2006 victor Maria Sharapova - down a place, as world number one Simona Halep is the top seed.

Though Forbes did not include a woman in their ranking of the world's top 100 highest earning athletes of 2018 after Williams' earnings fell by approximately $10 million since the year prior, only 16 male athletes earned more than Williams in sponsorship money over the last 12 months.

Serena Williams was the highest paid female athlete for a third consecutive year in 2018, according to an annual list here published by Forbes on Tuesday that was dominated by tennis players.

Indian badminton player P.V. Sindhu - with $8.5 million - and retired race vehicle driver Danica Patrick, who earned $7.5 million are the only non-tennis players to enter the top-10, placing seventh and ninth respectively.

Another US tennis player, Sloane Stephens, rounds off the top three highest-paid female players with a total income of $11.2 million having practically equal earnings on and off the tennis court.

U.S. media counters Trump with #EnemyOfNone campaign
The Fayetteville Observer said it hopes Mr Trump will stop making such accusations, "but we're not holding our breath". Thursday's edition of the Boston Globe features a full spread taking on President Donald Trump's fake news claims.

Serena Williams, who was the only woman on the list the previous year, dropped out of the chart while taking time off to have a baby.

In the men's draw Rafael Nadal, who past year won his third crown at Flushing Meadows, starts his defence against fellow Spaniard and long-time Davis Cup team mate David Ferrer, while second seed Roger Federer meets Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka.

World number one Simona Halep arrives at Flushing Meadows buoyed not only by her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros but by an impressive hardcourt campaign that included a victory in Montreal followed by a runner-up finish in Cincinnati. Williams missed last year's tournament because of pregnancy.

While Federer, who won the last of his five U.S. Open titles in 2008, is in the same quarter of the draw as twice champion and sixth-seeded Serb Novak Djokovic, the Swiss also has Australian Nick Kyrgios as a possible third-round opponent.
