Trump congratulates new Australian PM after week of political chaos

Mr Morrison distanced himself from the turmoil, saying he had not been part of the push led by fellow lawmaker Peter Dutton to oust Mr Turnbull over four chaotic days that was inspired by a feud between hard-right conservatives and moderates. The next scheduled party meeting is September 11. Other favorites include Treasurer Scott Morrison and the only declared challenger Peter Dutton, a former Cabinet minister.

Mr Turnbull had been under pressure from poor polling and what he described as an "insurgency" by conservative MPs.

His resignation would cause a by-election that could cost the government its single-seat majority.

On a well patronized message board on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation website, a respondent identifying herself as Alana C. wrote: "Call an election and let's be done with the bulls (asterisk)(asterisk)(asterisk)".

Morrison made brief public comments Saturday before meeting in Canberra, the capital, with farmers battling a severe drought that is affecting Australia's most populous state, New South Wales, in particular.

"I will be leaving the parliament not before too long", he said.

Turnbull delivered a swingeing attack on those who have undermined him.

Former human services minister Michael Keenan, who switched his allegiance from Malcolm Turnbull to back Mr Dutton, does not expect to be returned to the ministry.

"It's been described by many people, including those who feel they can not resist it, as a form of madness, and it is remarkable we're at this point where only a month ago we were being, as you all know being avid readers of polls, just little bit behind Labor and in our own polls a little bit ahead, but in any view thoroughly competitive". The Labor opposition is leading in the polls. Prior to that, he was immigration minister, where he was responsible for a number of hardline policies.

For years Turkish firms have borrowed in dollars and lira to take advantage of lower interest rates. Turkish officials say the case is a matter for the courts.

But after a torrid week of political manoeuvring in Canberra it was Morrison, a Turnbull ally who served as treasurer, who won a party vote 45-40.

"This is a very, very significant point". As we all know, section 44 has been a companion of this 45th parliament.

It was his last day as prime minister as he was succeeded by Morrison in the so-called Liberal spill.

Dutton's status is under question because of his family trust's interests in two childcare centres, which have reportedly received $5.6 million in subsidies from the government since 2010.

Dutton's legal advice is that he has no constitutional problem, and on Thursday he issued updated legal advice.

Australian media reported on Thursday that Treasurer Scott Morrison and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop would contest the top job if the spill motion is passed.

The right-wing of the party would prefer greater investment in the country's coal sector and policies to lower Australians' power prices.

While the last 10 days have been a disastrous train wreck for the Coalition, which is now nearly certain to be thrashed at the next election, Friday's result was the best to be hoped for.

Mr Turnbull did not contest the ballot and later confirmed his intention to quit politics.
