Dershowitz: 'Greatest Risk' to Trump Is From NY Prosecutors, Not Mueller Probe

April FrancisAug 28, 2018

Prosecutors believe there is very little about the Trump Organisation's financial transactions that Weisselberg doesn't know.

But then came revelations that his long-time friend, David Pecker, the CEO of National Enquirer publisher American Media Inc., had been granted immunity from prosecution to provide information, followed by news that Trump Organisation finance chief Allen Weisselberg, who had once worked for Trump's father, was cooperating as well.

The Journal said Pecker shared details with prosecutors about payments Cohen says Trump directed to buy the silence of two women alleging affairs with him.

In an interview on "Fox News Sunday", former attorney general Alberto Gonzales said that Cohen's guilty plea and the conviction of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort - in a prosecution led by Mueller's office - were creating "a lot of debate and swirl around the president as an individual, and that's never good".

Cohen found ways to profit from the arrangement, making millions from corporations by selling access to Trump, but felt adrift and isolated from Trump, according to two people familiar with his thinking who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss private conversations.

After the disclosure of the recording, Alan Futerfas, an attorney for the Trump Organization, disputed the idea that Weisselberg had signed off on Cohen's plan. In court filings, prosecutors say two unnamed Trump Organization employees - "executive 1" and "executive 2" - helped set up the reimbursement. Weisselberg's immunity was reportedly in return for information he gave about the payments to both McDougal and Daniels, according to the Journal. He served as treasurer of the Donald J. Trump Foundation and has long handled the Trump family personal expenses. Cohen said he made the payments at Trump's direction.

Cohen mentioned Weisselberg on a secret recording that Cohen made in September 2016 and which was aired on CNN last month.

It's not clear, though, that they have any bearing on the investigation itself.

It is the latest fallout from the wider inquiry launched by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in May 2017 into suspected collusion between the Trump election campaign and Russian Federation.

In a separate development, the NY attorney general is moving to open a state criminal tax investigation into Cohen. Guy Petrillo, an attorney for Cohen, did not respond to a request for comment.

Davis has strongly telegraphed that Cohen is willing to cooperate with Mueller's investigation.

Davis primarily functions as a spokesman for Cohen, with the bulk of the actual legal work being done by NY lawyer, Guy Petrillo, who used to work for the Manhattan office now leading the prosecution.

He was summoned to testify earlier this year in the investigation into Cohen, Donald Trump's longtime former lawyer, United States media report.
