Gordon Intensifies, Voluntary Evacuations Issued

Kerry GarnerSep 05, 2018

Tropical Storm Gordon whipped the southern tip of Florida with high winds and rain on Monday, and was expected to make landfall as a hurricane along the central U.S. Gulf Coast on Tuesday night, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Tropical storm and storm surge warnings were in effect along a long stretch of the central Gulf Coast from Morgan City, Louisiana, including Lake Pontchartrain, to the Alabama-Florida border.

Gordon formed into a tropical storm near the Florida Keys early Monday as it moved west-northwest at 26 km/h. The National Hurricane Center said Gordon's tight core was about 75 miles (125 kilometres) southeast of Biloxi, Mississippi, or about 70 miles (115 kilometres) south of Mobile, Alabama, where heavy rains and winds picked up shortly before nightfall.

Authorities across the Gulf Coast urged people to stay out of the water - warnings that beach lovers like Cameron Armstrong and Matthew Ewbanks ignored on their visit to Gulf Shores on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Tropical Storm Gordon has left many businesses on Florida's Gulf Coast feeling shortchanged by the holiday weekend.

In New Orleans, Mayor LaToya Cantrell issued a voluntary evacuation notice for areas outside of the New Orleans levee system.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said on Sunday he had activated the state's Crisis Action Team as a precaution.

Hurricane warnings stretch from the Florida/Alabama border to the Louisiana/Mississippi border as the storm center is most likely to strike along the Mississippi or Alabama coastline.

The National Hurricane Center reported that the storm could unleash "life-threatening" storm surge to portions of the central Gulf Coast.

But tropical storm conditions - winds of at least 39 miles per hour - could hit the Gulf Coast as early as Tuesday afternoon.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency warned of storm surges of between 1 and 1.5 metres and told South Mississippi residents to be prepared to evacuate. The area has already been heavily impacted by this summer's so-called "red tide" - massive algae blooms that have caused waves of dead marine life to wash up along the coast.

"If you are less than 3 to 5 feet above sea level (in the warning area), you need to get away from that water, especially up those rivers, because that's where that water will be going", CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said Tuesday morning.

Geo Rodriguez made a decision to go for a walk on Hollywood Beach, north of Miami, on Monday morning and got caught in the storm.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Florence continues to hold steady over the eastern Atlantic, about 1,135 miles west-northwest of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands. Forecasters say little change in strength is expected in coming days and no coastal watches or warnings are in effect.
