Serena Williams advances to US Open final

Keys, who is also an Australian and French Open semifinalist, will face Japanese sensation Naomi Osaka for a spot in the decider. So she's definitely someone that gets a lot of balls back and something I have to be ready for'.

American Madison Keys clinched her second consecutive U.S. Open semi-final berth on Wednesday, using her powerful serve and fiery forehand to get an edge on 30th seed Carla Suarez Navarro and win 6-4 6-3.

Keys, who is 23, thinks she is more equipped than ever to deal with important moments on important stages. So I know how to volley, but I usually come [to the net] just to shake hands. "And not shying away from those, but just really being honest about it and talking about it". One came in the last game as she served for the victory, but she erased it with a forehand victor, part of a 22-10 edge in that category.

The speedy win over Tsurenko was the third time Osaka has wrapped up victory in under an hour in NY and should allow her to be fresh for Thursday's semi-final.

Barely a year after giving birth to daughter Olympia, Williams is on the cusp of regaining her winning ways at almost 37 years old, having returned to the tour in March but only recent rediscovered the movement necessary to triumph.

Prior to this meeting, though, it is the first semi-final, between Serena Williams and Anastasia Sevastova, starting at midnight.

In the spring, that attention intensified when she beat three former world No. 1 players in Maria Sharapova, Karolina Pliskova and Simona Halep en route to her title in Indian Wells.

It was a great day for Japanese tennis as both Kei Nishikori and Naomi Osaka booked their passage to the US Open semifinals in two very different matches. That win was followed by a 4-6 6-1 6-2 comeback victory against Ekaterina Makarova and a seesawing triumph against seventh seed Elina Svitolina who she bested 6-3 1-6 6-0.

"It means a lot", she said. I try to fight every point even though I was really exhausted.

She becomes the first Japanese woman since Kimiko Date to reach the semis of a Slam.

Only once in the professional era that began in 1968 had Japan had a men's and women's player in the quarterfinals at the same tournament.

The 20-year-old said she was nervous and claimed to be "freaking out inside", though it certainly never showed. So obviously I know her game really well. In her third-round match, she was even quicker, dominating Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 6-0, 6-0, in 50 minutes.

"I didn't want to pull out as it's a Grand Slam quarter-final but she played well". She then dealt with complications related to blood clots.

Keys and Suarez Navarro met three times previously, with Keys winning all three matches in three sets.

On Wednesday, Osaka only needed 12 winners because a whopping 31 of her other points came via unforced errors by Tsurenko.

"I hate matches like this", said Tsurenko.
