Del Potro, Djokovic in US Open final as injured Nadal quits

May JohnsonSep 11, 2018

After nearly 16 hours of play, Rafael Nadal's body finally gave in.

Nadal announced his plan to retire to the chair umpire after approaching him about a line call during the sixth game of the second set. "Even before I went through the whole process of surgery, post-surgery recovery, I was still feeling for players that went through injuries", Djokovic said.

That's what I try to do tomorrow, with the ice bath, then massage, then came for hit the ball a little bit also. I didn't expect to get these kinds of emotions playing tennis again.

"I don't see any limits". But no, it was not the day.

Thankfully, the 21st seed appeared to avoid injury and duly played his best tennis of the match after dropping the first set, fighting hard to stay with his illustrious opponent.

The Spaniard has spent more time on court than any other player in the tournament and faced question marks over whether he would be at a physical disadvantage today.

Third seed Del Potro, the champion in 2009, was 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 ahead when Nadal retired.

"Of course it's not the best way to win a match".

"I guess he knew it was going to probably not be enough against some players, but he was happy enough playing this way, which I admire a lot". The negative thing is two of them have been in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of a grand slam, close to fight for titles.

Here's how Google's Pixel 3 phones are shaping up
The Google Pixel 3 is expected to be a powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor along with 4GB of RAM . Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 has been priced at $1,000 for the base model and $1250 for the 8GB RAM/512GB storage variant.

Nishikori and Djokovic possess very similar games in that they are both great defenders from the back of the court, they move incredibly well and they like to dictate from the baseline, but the fact of the matter is that Djokovic is superior in all those departments and has a few extra weapons in his arsenal that Nishikori doesn't possess.

"I can not compare the knee with other times as the pain is always very similar".

"I didn't know if I (would) be a tennis player again or not". Djokovic regained the physical strength and confidence necessary to play at tennis's top level and won Wimbledon last month, ousting Kevin Anderson in the final.

But Djokovic, who looked on from the sidelines while Federer and Nadal padded their Grand Slam totals, now stands one victory away from winning Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year for the third time in his career.

The 32-year-old, who has only lost two other matches all season, said: "It's not about losing". "I had more time to work on certain things".

Sep 7, 2018; New York, NY, USA; Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina wins the first set over Rafael Nadal of Spain in a men's semi-final match on day twelve of the 2018 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He has won the last 13 meetings, such a run of dominance that the Japan native didn't recall that he beat Djokovic in Flushing Meadows in the 2014 semifinals, adding that maybe he should rewatch the match.

This has been the Serbian's most consistent slam - aside from a year ago, when he was sidelined by an elbow problem, he has not lost before the semi-finals since 2006 - but he has only won the title twice.

"I've been fighting with many, many problems to get [to] this moment", del Potro said. "I have a very good head-to-head score against him".

"I mean, he's a gentle giant", Djokovic said.
