S.Africa ‘close to war zone’ with 57 murders a day: minister

South African police say a man with a knife fatally stabbed two people and wounded several others at a mosque near Cape Town before police shot and killed the attacker. The minister has described the figures as those of a war zone.

Around 57 people are murdered in South Africa everyday according to crime statistics, the country's Police Minister revealed on Tuesday.

Yet in Umlazi, in KwaZulu-Natal, there was an even more sobering increase in murders reported, up by 19.3 % from 187 to 223 murders.

Nyanga, in the Western Cape, maintained its unenvious title of "murder capital of South Africa" with 308 killings in the financial year under review, compared to the 281 cases reported at the same area in the previous year (an increase of 9.6%).

A further breakdown of the data showed that murders of women and children have also increased, accounting for just under 20% of all murders.

Gauteng had the most reported murders, with a total of 4 233 in the period between 2017/18 (up from 4 101 the previous year).

"What we have also observed is that hostel-related murders remain the reality in KZN".

The province with the least amount of murders was the Northern Cape at 340, a decrease from last year's 344. Gugulethu‚ Khayelitsha and the Delft police stations also made it into the top 10.

The murder of women increased by 11 per cent with 2 930 murders compared to 2 639 in 2016/2017.

"The White Paper proposes a "whole of government and whole of society" approach for successful implementation‚ and will require the different spheres of government to work together to align and amend existing strategies and plans to address how they will contribute to safety‚" the department said.

Cele further said: "The crime stats are nothing to write home about".

The spate of cash-in-transit heists are reflected in the stats (although, it hasn't caught all of them) with an increase of 56.6%, up from 152 in 2017 to 238 in 2018.
