South African police say a man with a knife fatally stabbed two people and wounded several others at a mosque near Cape Town before police shot and killed the attacker. The minister has described the figures as those of a war zone.

Yet in Umlazi, in KwaZulu-Natal, there was an even more sobering increase in murders reported, up by 19.3 % from 187 to 223 murders.

Nyanga, in the Western Cape, maintained its unenvious title of "murder capital of South Africa" with 308 killings in the financial year under review, compared to the 281 cases reported at the same area in the previous year (an increase of 9.6%).

A further breakdown of the data showed that murders of women and children have also increased, accounting for just under 20% of all murders.

Gauteng had the most reported murders, with a total of 4 233 in the period between 2017/18 (up from 4 101 the previous year).
