Amazon looking to launch up to 8 Alexa-powered devices

Marion JacobsSep 20, 2018

A new report by CNBC suggests that the company has plans for at least eight new Alexa-enabled devices, ranging from predictable items, such as an amplifier and a subwoofer, to the less conventional, such as a microwave.

Amazon will reportedly hold an event sometime later this year to reveal the devices to the world.

Amazon's voice-activated assistant Alexa has a significant presence in consumers' homes, thanks to the robust ecosystem of developers and manufacturers who are incorporating Alexa into their devices.

Having its own home appliances also opens up a new sales channel for Amazon. And as far as your kitchen is concerned, that means an Alexa-integrated Amazon microwave is on its way.

Merger of Vijaya Bank, Dena Bank & Bank of Baroda announced
Vijaya Bank shares traded at Rs 60.55, up Rs 0.75 and Dena Bank shares traded at Rs 19.10, with a gain of Rs 3.15 on the BSE. The merged entity will have a combined business of Rs 14.82 lakh crore, with 10,000 branches and around 85,000 employees.

Some of the devices will have Alexa built in, while others will be able to connect to the voice assistant.

Meanwhile, additional details on these forthcoming smart appliances are extremely slim: CNBC cities only "an internal document" and "people familiar with the matter" before later stating that Amazon declined to comment. Amazon has often taken a scattershot approach to its hardware initiatives, releasing not only massively successful products like the Echo home devices, but also experimental projects like Echo Buttons, a light-up device designed for gaming.

At present, Amazon's smart speakers and many third-party speakers come with Alexa built-in. Though Alexa already enjoys a very popular presence on the market, it faces growing competition from Google via its Google Assistant and Home products. Of course, there are rumours that Amazon is also building robots for the home. Amazon could launch a few from the list towards September-end.

That could see the ecommerce giant get its gadgets and voice assistant into more rooms around your home, and perhaps get you to buy more stuff from its site.
