Rosenstein Proposed Recording Trump, Using 25th Amendment To Oust Him Last Year

April FrancisSep 22, 2018

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein speaks during a news conference at the Department of Justice in Washington.

The White House has not commented on the Rosenstein story.

"The New York Times's story is inaccurate and factually incorrect", Rosenstein said in a statement.

"I will not further comment on a story based on anonymous sources who are obviously biased against the Department and are advancing their own personal agenda", Rosenstein said.

He noted that Rosenstein never specifically denied bringing up the 25th amendment, merely that he now sees "no basis" to invoke it now.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein floated the idea of secretly recording President Donald Trump a year ago amid law enforcement concerns about chaos in the White House, according to people familiar with exchanges at the time.

One former senior Justice Department official who was in the room when Rosenstein made the remark about recording the president was made tells CBS News, "I remember this meeting and remember the wire comment". Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was joking when he discussed wearing a wire to secretly record President Donald Trump and does not believe Trump should be removed from office through the use of procedures outlined in the Constitution's 25th Amendment, according to sources familiar with his conversations.

After the Times story was published, McCabe's attorney, Michael R. Bromwich, released statement saying his client did not leak the memos he made while at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Hurricane Florence: At least 10 dead, Carolinas brace for widespread flooding
The issues prompted North Carolina to tell drivers coming down Interstate 95 from Virginia to go around - the entire state. Hurricane Florence made landfall Friday in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina , after stalking the coastline for days.

"Andrew McCabe drafted memos to memorialize significant discussions he had with high level officials and preserved them so he would have an accurate, contemporaneous record of those discussions", McCabe's attorneys said. "He has no knowledge of how any member of the media obtained those memos".

According to the piece, Rosenstein expressed frustration with how President Trump had relied heavily on the deputy AG's memo documenting James Comey's mishandling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation to fire the FBI director.

Rumors have abounded for months that Trump has considered firing Rosenstein, though the president said last month they have a "great relationship".

At that point, Rosenstein said to McCabe something to the effect of, "What do you want, you want me to wear a wire?" according to the person.

Rosenstein reportedly made the comments just two weeks into his job, and after he began overseeing the investigation into Russian election interference.

None of his proposals appear to have been acted upon, according to the Times, but the report will nearly certainly increase Trump's ire at the deputy attorney general - and potentially put his job in jeopardy. Politico reported that the White House knew about the story at least 24 hours before it broke.

"He had begun overseeing the Russian Federation investigation and played a key role in the president's dismissal of Mr. Comey by writing a memo critical of his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation".
