Dallas Police Chief Fires Amber Guyger

April FrancisSep 25, 2018

Amber Guyger, the Dallas officer who shot and killed her neighbor, was summoned to Dallas Police Department headquarters Monday and fired.

What is clear is that Guyger turned herself in to the authorities almost three days after she killed Jean.

The news release said an internal affairs investigation concluded that Guyger "engaged in adverse conduct" when she fatally shot Jean at his South Side Flats apartment on the night of September 6.

Guyger was a four-year veteran of the police force.

The Dallas County district attorney has expressed a desire to present the case to a grand jury - which, as KERA notes, could result in stiffer charges.

The Associated Press reports that Dallas has let Guyger go, citing the allegations against her, following an internal investigation into Guyger's behavior.

Guyger was charged with manslaughter in the killing; she is now free on $300,000 bond.

One of the family's attorneys, Lee Merritt, said Jean was being buried Monday in St. Lucia.

She had been on administrative leave, as activists called for her immediate firing.

"Our office continues to conduct its parallel investigation into this matter as we prepare a 1983 civil rights action against Guyger and the City of Dallas for the wrongful death of Mr. Jean".

Guyger had recently ended a 15-hour shift when she returned in uniform to the South Side Flats apartment complex.

Guyger entered Jean's apartment allegedly thinking it was her own, then shot its occupant, who was black and unarmed. Gyger believed she was confronted with an intruder and proceeded to shoot Jean.

After completing an internal investigation, the police department said Guyger was "terminated for her actions" during her arrest. When she opened the door, she saw the interior was almost completely dark, according to the affidavit. Before she was sacked, she "remained on the city payroll on administrative leave", The Texas Tribune reports.

When she put her key in the apartment door, which was unlocked and slightly ajar, it opened, the affidavit said. Jean later died at a hospital after being shot once in the torso.

Officials are specifically seeking footage recorded from 8am the day the shooting took place until midnight in order to trace Guyger's steps leading up to the Jean's death.
