Environment Canada confirms Ottawa area was hit by two tornadoes

A powerful tornado that carved a path through parts of Canada's capital snapped trees, tossed cars and obliterated dozens of homes leaving what the city's mayor on Saturday said resembled "a war scene".

They said they'd arrived home just a few minutes before the tornado cut its swath through the neighbourhood.

Environment Canada said that at nearly the same time a second, slightly less powerful, twister touched down in the south Ottawa neighbourhood of Arlington Woods.

The premier was accompanied by city Mayor Jim Watson as he toured houses ravaged by the twister before in jumped the Ottawa River to Gatineau, Que.

Anthony Di Monte, chief of Ottawa Emergency and Protective Services, told CTV News that there are now 30 known injuries across the city with five people in the Dunrobin area of Ottawa suffering critical injuries.

Hydro crews were at work this morning trying to untangle and fix fallen power lines, some of which snapped like twigs in the Friday tornadoes that hit the Ottawa area.

Evacuations were underway in Gatineau on Friday night after buildings were damaged by severe weather, the Gatineau police department said.

All utilities say hundreds of their crews are working around the clock in order to restore power to all of their customers as soon as possible.

The Ontario government announced Saturday that it was activating the province's Disaster Recovery Assistance program in affected areas, while the Quebec government announced it would give the Red Cross $1 million to help with relief efforts.

"It's tough but at the same time the community has really rallied together".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the federal government is prepared to assist those whose lives have been turned on end.
