Interpol head goes missing after China visit, French police starts probe

April FrancisOct 06, 2018

French police said earlier they had launched a search for Meng after being contacted by his wife, news agencies reported.

It was not clear whether Mr Meng had travelled to China on official business or for personal reasons. In China, he holds the post of deputy minister of public security - now the highest point of a 45-year-long political career.

An unnamed French judicial official said Meng arrived in China at the end of September but added that there had been no news of him since. Rights groups expressed concern at the time that Beijing might try to use Meng's position at the body to go after dissidents overseas.

While Meng is listed on the website of China's Ministry of Public Security as a vice-minister, he lost his seat on its Communist Party Committee, its real decision-making body, in April.

Police reportedly questioned Kavanaugh after bar fight in 1985
Cozzolino declined to give a comment to The New York Times regarding the report, and has not released any statement on the matter. In a follow-up tweet , the Yale Law Schooler lecturer wrote: "Those are fundamental values we try to instill in our students".

Interpol released a statement saying only that it was "aware of media reports in connection with the alleged disappearance" of Meng. France, China and Interpol officials are yet to comment on the reports.

China Daily emphasized the potential boost to China's recent clampdown on corruption, noting that China had increasingly worked with Interpol to pursue "China's 100 most-wanted fugitives suspected of corruption".

In conclusion, Hatton asks, "If [Meng] has really gone missing within the Chinese state apparatus, who did he anger, or what could he have done for Beijing to willingly, and publicly, forfeit the top job at Interpol?".

Presidents of Interpol are seconded from their national administrations and remain in their home post while representing the global policing body. Mr Xi has waged a campaign against corruption and has sought the return of suspected officials and businesspeople who fled overseas.
