Apple Repair Policy Change Is Focused On Security

Marion JacobsOct 08, 2018

Whether it's the need to protect their products' security and integrity, or just a slimy business practice, Apple is one of the most prevalent of modern tech companies that are clamping down on third-party repairs of their devices. If someone replaces the RAM on the mac with the T2 chip included MacBook or the iMac, then the device will not be able to detect that part, as the information about the specific hardware will not be present on the T2 chip and the device will not turn on. The locking software impacts any repairs on the 2018 MacBook display assembly, logic board, top case, and the Touch ID board. This often-controversial model is now being expanded upon as Apple seeks more control. Eliminating independent repairs from its current-gen lineup, and possibly all future models, will enable Apple to control the fix process for its desktop and laptop computers.

After a T2-equipped Apple device is repaired, it'll only boot up successfully if a diagnostic software called Apple Service Toolkit 2 gives it a green flag. The 2018 MacBook Pro computers and Mac Pros are now the only devices this software lock applies to, as they are outfitted with a new "T2 security chip".

The Apple Service Toolkit 2, according to a report by Vice, only works with an active connection to Apple's cloud-based Global Service Exchange server with a valid Apple login. If something goes wrong with your Mac you're being left with fewer and fewer options before you'll have to send it off to Apple's "reasonably priced" own fix service. Apple is fighting this legislation; public records show that Apple is lobbying against the bill in NY, where lobbying records must be disclosed to the public. The firm is making this possible by using its native software diagnostic tool for repairing key parts of the devices.

New training jet destined for CAFB
The Air Force would not comment on the competing companies, but Reuters reported they were Leonardo DVS and Lockheed Martin . CAFB First Lieutenant Public Affairs Officer Kara Crennan said the contract with Boeing was finalized Thursday.

Earlier this year, Apple refused to replace troublesome iPhone batteries if the devices passed a diagnostic test - but later relented and offered unconditional replacements.

What do you think of Apple's latest moves? Its owners, however, will have to be very careful with the laptop, as they will not be able to self-repair or take advantage of cheaper prices offered by third-party services.
