Palestinian kills two Israelis in West Bank shooting

April FrancisOct 10, 2018

Clashes often erupt between Palestinian youth who attempt to block soldiers' passage, throwing stones and empty bottles and are met with live fire, rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas canisters, often resulting in serious, sometimes fatal, injuries.

The suspect, a 23-year-old Palestinian man from the West Bank village of Shuweika, entered a factory and opened fire with a "Carlo", a homemade automatic weapon, said Conricus.

According to Israeli and Palestinian estimates, roughly 650,000 Jewish settlers now live in settlements across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

A woman aged 54 was also found wounded and in moderate condition, the medical services said. (Emphasis added.) In fact, officials rightly characterized yesterday's attack in the Barkan industrial park, in which a Palestinian gunman fatally shot two Israeli civilians and wounded a third, as a terror attack, not a militant attack.

Hamas, the movement that runs the Gaza Strip, welcomed the attack and called it a "natural response to the crimes of the Israeli occupation".

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has no doubts that the perpetrators of the attack "will be caught and put to justice".

But he has set the bar very high for himself after last season, and some concerns over his "slow" start to the season have been voiced.

At least 196 Palestinians, including at least 50 Hamas members, have been killed since the protests began.

Israeli forces conduct overnight detention raids nearly on a daily basis across the West Bank, triggering clashes with residents.

The attack took place at the Barkan depot of the Alon Group, which manufactures recycling and environmental products, according to Eran Bodankin, a manager at the site.

Last month, a Palestinian teenager stabbed to death the US-born settler Ari Fuld, a well-known pro-Israel advocate, at a shopping centre in Gush Etzion.

Israeli media said the shooter was a former Palestinian worker from the West Bank city of Tulkarem. The settlements are considered illegal under global law, though Israel disputes this.

A wave of Palestinian attacks against Israelis broke out in 2015, but they have since become sporadic.
