Injured Halep withdraws from WTA Finals

May JohnsonOct 22, 2018

The Romanian's career arc was undoubtedly one of the year's most inspirational when, in her fourth major final, she finally got over the line to become a Grand Slam champion for the first time at Roland Garros.

The Romanian, who secured the end of year top ranking for a second successive season earlier this week, has made the hard decision not to compete in Singapore to put her "long-term health first".

"The decision was tough for sure", Halep told WTA Insider.

The world No. 10 had defeated Halep in August to win the biggest title of her career at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Despite withdrawing from Singapore, Halep though is guaranteed to end 2018 as world number one for the second consecutive year.

While the top eight singles players will compete in a round-robin format with the victor taking home the Billie Jean King Trophy, the top eight doubles teams will compete in a knockout format for the WTA Finals Martina Navratilova Trophy. But it will be better for my health.

It will offer fans a monthly subscription service to watch the fights rather than having to pay hefty pay-per-view fees. He will meet secondary world champ Rocky Fielding on December 15 at Madison Square Garden in NY .

Her statement of withdrawal reads: "I'm not ready to compete at this level and I'm still sore, I didn't practise for the last four weeks. I look forward to being back to compete in front of the incredible crowd".

Bertens, who made the cut following Halep's injury, will make her debut at the WTA Finals. "It's not easy to go on court and compete at this moment".

"Singapore is a special city and I'm sure the fans will enjoy seeing some fantastic women's tennis this week". Halep is back as the year-end No. 1 for the second year in a row despite a back injury that doctors say could lead to a long-term problem.

The 26-year-old will be first Dutchwoman to compete at the season-ending showpiece in more than 20 years, since Brenda Schultz-McCarthy lost in the first round in 1997.

The White Group will feature defending WTA Finals champion Caroline Wozniacki, 2011 victor Petra Kvitova, Elina Svitolina and Karolina Pliskova.
